GARIFUNAS IN THE BRONX
•
I’m so happy to honor my Garifuna roots during Hispanic Heritage Month. I’ve been working hard at my first feature length film, and though it comes with its challenges, it has exposed me to the deepest and most beautiful depths of my family’s lineage. I took a trip to The Bronx to learn more about my family’s history, and to dive into the Garifuna community. I spoke with my family. We ate together, danced together, and held each other with the biggest smiles on our faces. I hope everyone gets an opportunity to look at the layers beneath their existence.

Every like, comment, and share helps amplify the making of Derretido.

Sacred expressions. I could stare at these photos for hours. There’s something beautiful about people expressing themselves creatively without seeking fame, wealth, or validation. Simply a celebration of culture, life, and spirituality. I hope we all move closer to who we truly are, rather than an image we feel we have to become.

The Bronx & My Garifuna Family ❤️
•
Spending time with my family in The Bronx was one of the most beautiful experiences of my life.

My father is the 10th and youngest of 10, born in 1961. His oldest sibling, my auntie, was born in the 1930s. My grandfather was born in 1917 and lived long enough to meet me and hold me as a baby. My grandmother lived to be 96.

Seeing my lineage through these photographs is SO special. They’re more than pictures, they’re pieces of my history, my family, and my Garifuna heritage.

Learning these stories has deeply impacted me and my screenplay. The more I discover about where I come from, the more I discover about myself.

This film has opened up a beautiful place inside of me. ❤️

10K RAISED FOR OUR NEXT FILM 🙏🏾
4 days left.
•
Another incredible milestone in this special film campaign. Shout out to my extended Garifuna and/or Honduran family 🫂. Shout out to Detroit, NYC, LA, Texas, and every other city involved!

I can’t express enough how grateful I am for all of your support. In less than 25 days, I’ve connected with people from all over the world about immigration, keeping America colorful, preserving Garifuna culture, protecting families, and so much more.

10k is a big leap for our production. This project will take far more than a 30-day campaign to bring to life, but your support empowers us to do the hard work required to create a film that we can all be inspired by, represented by, and proud of.

There is no other way. I don’t take a single moment of this journey for granted. Thank you for believing in this vision.

P.S. Catch me in Detroit this Friday at The Climax. There’ll be more opportunities to support us there. 🫂 taken in Detroit, Michigan by @andresmakesart

120 pages written. It feels good to say there’s still a lot more work left to do. Life is interesting that way.

Aside from the long road to Derretido, I’m happy I get to prep for some cool visuals with and for my friends. by @andresmakesart

We return this week with an independent film project by writer and filmmaker Andrés Guerrero. Derretido began as a short film about a family in the face of immigration and deportation and is now expanding into a feature film with the support of the community that has grown around the film.

At its heart, Derretido is a coming-of-age story about a young man named Martín.

Years after his father’s deportation, Martín feels caught between the Detroit home he knows and a Garifuna heritage he has never fully understood. As he begins to seek out his family’s story, he must reckon with what it means to know where he comes from and where he belongs.

Derretido! We reached the minimum budget goal of 5k to make Detretido. Now we’re eying our next goal of 10k to make the best film we can. I am eternally grateful to everyone who has contributed to this film, and will be making a proper thank you video by the end of this campaign. We still have 22 days to go!

That means we’ve secured the minimum funding threshold for Derretido and now have even more time to grow our budget so we can better compensate the incredible cast and crew who are bringing this film to life.

I wanted to share this photo of my little brother and me because this was around the time I fell in love with filmmaking. I’m wearing my dad’s two-toned Honduran hat. That was my favorite hat because I was so proud of where my family came from. We were the only Garífuna kids where I lived, and having a father who was born and raised in Honduras taught me that I could become anything I set my mind to. As a Black man, I was never limited by the stereotypes placed on me. I learned to see myself as expansive.

I can’t fully put into words how grateful I am to everyone who has taken the time to support this project. Every contribution, share, comment, and word of encouragement has brought us one step closer to making this film a reality. Thanks to your continued support, we’ll be able to create the very best version of Derretido.

Full circle moment. This is from one of my student short films back in film school years ago. It was the first time I put a piece of Garifuna culture in film. From picking the theme song to casting my father as co-lead. It was a strange time because prior to this my father had spent several months detained by ice and my mother, the greatest mother in the world, had us all go to court so that he could be released. The making of this student film came with a lot of deep and honest conversations with my pops.

One of my film instructors told me I should go deeper into the Garifuna culture for my thesis. I ended up going a different direction. Yet here I am now, in the process of making a film that not only reflects the Garifuna culture, but the reality that many immigrants across all walks of life face. There’s so many different shades and colors to the immigrant experience, and I want to explore this in a longer, and bigger format.

We are still campaigning to raise funds to bring my next film, Derretido, to life. We reached our minimum goal of 5k, and we are so grateful for that. With more contributions, we’ll have more to invest into the making of this film (crew, cast, film stock/processing, locations, etc). The link is in my bio for any one interested in contributing. 🤍
