My new single has been released! My recording effort is on the slow burn, over a year since the last one. Not in any hurry but there are more to come.

Music in the Air was written 30 some years ago when I was making a focused effort to write original music. I was between things and places like Prague (busking on the Bridge with Honza), San Antonio (leading a really good band) and NYC (being encouraged to quit music) and several songs flowed, some were demoed or partially remembered. These days I’m content playing classic bluegrass and jazz since all the good tunes are already out there and ready to go.

This was recorded over the past year back in my hometown of Gonzales, TX which also might have inspired the nostalgia in the song where we used to chase lightning bugs and go “down to the Gulf of Mexico”.

My high school friend and bandmate Gabe Gallardo has built a studio there and we reconnected over music and picked up where we left off. This was a family band project with Sophie Parker and Albert Atkinson lending their instrumental and vocal talents.

The artwork is the creation of Fleabilly @fleabilly who channelled the painting style of my deceased father who had a brief but intense artistic streak back before I was born.

Good music flows with great art. Ray Lewis @fleabilly was a great friend and instigator of my Dad’s who had a brief but very productive creative streak of painting in the mid-60’s. Ray and I collaborated on the cover of “Before the Sun is Gone” with the tools that allow one to perform a seance and ask what Rudy would have painted if he were still living. Vrána means “crow” in Czech. This icon was a part of our family identity and I always take a second look when I see them, NM has many! Back then, one of his students DIY stuffed one and gave it to him as a gift and it’s still out at the ranch. Texas and NM share great sunsets and this song captures that. I wrote this 30 years ago and it’s just more relevant. by @andrew.vrana

Spent the week plastering our adobe house in Taos with Juanito and Adrian, the colorist. Going on 9 years with Casa Pajaro @casa.pajaro.taos so a new layer on what is no longer pure earth but it’s got good mud bones going back to 1795. The interior was painted by Jim Wagner so we pushed the red color that he might have liked… taken in Taos, New Mexico by @andrew.vrana

Twenty years of marriage, a lifetime of music… and somehow, The Blue Moonlighters are just getting started.

Andrew and Sophie have always played music together at home, but only recently started bringing it out into the world for audiences, creating a space where Sophie could step outside of her classical career and the two of them could explore swing, gypsy jazz, Americana and everything in between.

And apparently, there’s one thing that makes them play even better: You dancing.

So we’re clearing a little extra room Wednesday night.

The Blue Moonlighters take the stage with Morris Moon for an evening of swing music, cocktails, and dancing.

Sophie and I are celebrating our 20th anniversary this month and kicked it off with a party with our family and friends who attended our wedding and are still with us. We were joined by @mike_v_guitar (who played at our Houston wedding party) @morrishmoon and @alan_simmons_bass. We played a few with them, visited with guests, ate some wonderful food by @chefadamp78 and did some swing dancing. Thank you @cowboysurferbar and @henrypaulrogers.
