POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

It’s been a while since I’ve stuck my face on here and shared any words about myself and my practice… hopefully you’ll find this interesting, especially if you’re a new follower of my work.
.
I grew up on a farm in Cumbria, and had what I suppose most people would call an idyllic rural childhood… somehow through the myriad twists and turns that life throws at us I arrived and settled in Stockport, a small ex-industrial town on the edge of Greater Manchester. I live with my wife and two small boys, with whom I attempt to live a quiet life dividing my time between family, painting and tending to my allotment.
.
I make work that hovers on the boundaries of abstraction and landscape, calling on the grandeur of nature to be condensed into small atmospheric paintings of impulsive brushstrokes and gestural paint handling. I am interested in the power of painting to prompt a visceral, emotional response… without the necessity of intellectual examination. Life is a powerful, raw, beautiful and painful experience, and I want my paintings to reflect these feelings and invite viewers to have, and to engage with, their own emotional response to the work.

I’ve been struggling with Instagram again lately… none of my posts are being pushed out to my followers… again… I do wonder sometimes whether the fact all my posts are a similar format has something to do with it. I’m too old to change though, and no one wants to see a grumpy fat bearded middle-aged man acting like a performing monkey for clicks.
.
Maybe some of you will see this one. It’s a bit different to my usual fare, so maybe the algorithm will think it’s worthy of a little push… maybe… you can buy it on my website if you love it and wish it was hung on your living room wall.

An appropriately named painting today… as I was taking my morning walk in our local park, it appears that all the geese have indeed gone. On to warmer pastures for the winter I suppose. I’ve been walking around the park and reservoirs at the end of our street every morning for the last year or so (in an attempt to lose the middle-aged girth I appear to have acquired) and it’s been fascinating watching the seasons and birds change.
