Showcase Festivals: Are They Worth it? Showcase Festivals are a wonderful place for emerging artists to perform in front of the best of the best in the industry. In addition, the amount of networking opportunities, panels, marketing and general shmoozing is often worth the price of the ticket. Sadly, too many of these showcases exclude our genre.

We’ve put together a stellar panel of some of the showcase festivals that actually pay attention to metal (or are starting to) and understand the importance of equal representation for all genres.

Countries with volatile exchange rates make it extra difficult to have a clear picture on overall costs. The Balkans, Türkiye and some of the Eastern European countries are no strangers to this.

56 years old today, as the world burns with an intensity not seen since before I was born. I had a great year, but I'm mindful that 2025 has been scary and downright disastrous for many. I continue to enjoy my career and my colleagues. I got a lot of writing done and published it. I travelled and saw a lot of live music, and a decent batch of sporting events too. I made some good new friends and reconnected with old ones. I exercised all year and ate right much of the time. I read a bunch of good books. I took time to relax, recover and enjoy day-to-day life at my happy home with my three happy cats. I reflected on the past, enjoyed moments as they happened and planned for the future. I get to spend the winter holidays with my Mom, Dad and my sister Laura, and got to spend the year around many people whom I love, and who love me back. Not one bit of any of this is taken for granted. Time to head for 57. Put it in drive and go. See you out there.

Finally saw this in a theatre last night for the first time after many watches on VHS and DVD, and it looked great and sounded far better than ever in an @imax theater. Unlike many concert films from the era, it's only got a 1:25 running time so it doesn't overstay its welcome.

The live footage captures the band's best early tripped-out stuff, and the idea of the band playing this material in the empty ruins of Pompeii (save for film and audio crews) works brilliantly.

The studio footage of the band recording Dark Side of the Moon shows a confident group of thin twenty-something rock blokes who know they're good and know they're working on something good, but you can also see they have no idea just exactly how big they're about to become. They're also getting along with each other, and that would also change.

It was fun to see this with a crowd who applauded after each song, and in a pleasant surprise at least half of said crowd were Millenials or Gen Z.

As an added bonus, two people got thrown out near the end of the film for singing along and arguing with people who asked them to be quiet. I suspect that snuck-in booze may have been a factor, and there was applause, epithets and numerous middle fingers from almost everyone near them as they got escorted out during the second half of "Echoes." It all played out like something at a midnight showing of a rock film at the Pittsburgh Playhouse or the King's Court Theatre in the 1980s.

As a matter of fact, yes. This *is* my first rodeo.

@rodeohouston is an incredible 3 week event with an insane amount of people, animals and moving parts. And because it was a cousins weekend with John Churchill (a big-time volunteer for the event) it was fast track and VIP all the way, plus all kinds of knowledge and stories of what's all happening and how it all works. There was bronco riding, bull riding, mutton busting, @bailey.zimmerman playing an hour-long country set that presents as a rock show, livestock auctions, merch, 4H, lots of good eating, and many other things.

Also got inside looks at @eldorado.ballroom and @rowhouseproject thanks to @nonsequiteuse on Friday before hang time with @michellestill and Charles Still.

Lastly, you've gotta see the pics of John's unstoppable 1.5 year old boxer, Brooklyn. She is an absolute joy and you can see her in the last two photos. taken in Houston, Texas by @andrewccarter1

On a trip that's already had many high points, tonight's gathering of the Pittsburgh metal masses was yet another one.

This is the second time in three years we've done this on Boxing Day, and we've decided this is officially going to be an annual thing.

55 years old today, and celebrated with a trip back to the east end for lunch at the Triangle Grill in Swissvale, a drive past the old house in Regent Square, and then taking my family to see A Complete Unknown (they all loved it, and it was the first time I got to watch one of my screen credits in a theater with them, a proud moment), followed by Mom's home-cooked dinner.

I like to think that I'm not even at halftime of my life, but I also know that's not entirely within my control and that tomorrow is not promised. But I will do my part and keep on buying the tickets and taking the rides.

This actually happened a couple weeks ago before I headed east, but I waited until birthday eve to post this so I don't fool with the time-space continuum too much more.

In what might be my most stunning news item of the year, I went to church today. It was back to my family's parish St. Andrew's Episcopal with my oldest friend, Thatcher Montgomery and his son TJ. Thatch and I met in Sunday School here when we were each 4 years old.

I don't think this place had seen my shadow in 25 years. But some parts of it haven't changed, including the nursery where my Grandma looked after the congregation's infants and toddlers for decades.
