Wanted to dip my hand into the Spider-Verse last week. I tried some versions and villains I havnt seen yet. Luchador Spider-Man, Luchador Venom, Manslaughter, Rhino, Human Fly, Black Fox, and Mindworm.

The first movie is one of my favorite of all time and has very deep meaning to me and my brothers. Taking the leap of faith. Believing In yourself. Hip hop and graffiti etc. Again my challenge to myself was to do one a day.

Also if they play Tribe Called Quest’s Award Tour in the next movie during a dope scene or something I might cry from the sheer dopeness.

Our second project for Character Design 2 class at @conceptdesignacad was to design characters for a remake of Space Adventure: Cobra. My vision was what if Ryan Coogler directed a high budget 3D animated film with @madlib making the movie soundtrack? I don’t know about ya’ll but I’d pay to see that! My Cobra is loosely inspired and based on my good buddy @blackbearuwandi . Certainly them big ol’ shoulders! Again, a very big thank you to Kevin Chen and @joshuajamesshaw for all the knowledge and guidance. And another big thank you to @cra0la for the help (he’s also a great teacher go buy his character design fundamentals book!)

A quick little side story if you’ve made it this far. Back on 2018 I took this class with Mike and quit halfway through. I also took a class with Joshua and quit within the first few weeks. Some would say I had my reasons but it always left a stain on me I felt. Since then it’s been a pleasure to see Mike grow as a human, artist and friend. This year I felt that I had to turn these L’s into W’s. So I decided to take the class again 6 years later. I always strive to improve and it was time. It really kicked my ass though. Having a new baby now, a wife, a full time job, and getting ready for a move…it was not easy. But I put in my time and finished the class in excellent fashion. Now when things get hard for my son I can say “You can finish now and do your best, or walk away and feel the sting of not knowing.” I can say that from a place of authenticity now. So this class wasn’t just a class it really meant a lot to me.

Did a little video talking about a “hero prop” I designed. A hero prop is basically just like a significant prop in a game. More so than say a cart or chest etc. Anyhoos, feel free to have a look and listen if you’re interested!

I had the pleasure to design all the great swords in Avowed. If you’ve played the game, you’ve probably found some of them! I did a ton of other weapon concepts. Here are some of the ones I liked. For this game, we couldn’t get too whimsical with the silhouettes of the weapons. We had to work within strict animation guidelines. This made it easier for animation. Also, the world of Avowed, though fantastical, is somewhat grounded in reality.

Here are great swords, axes, maces (@brenze70 I believe did initial designs for a few of the maces and I took them to a finish), shields, and war hammers.

I hope you’re enjoying some of the work I’ve been sharing for Avowed. I have a few more batches to share then I’ll move onto some other stuff! I just did so much work that I feel weird keeping it all to myself. I’ve always been that kid in Highschool who was eager to share my drawings with friends. I hope it’s interesting to you! Thanks for having a look 😊

I had the honor to design the weapons for Avowed companions Kai and Giatta.

Kai is a sailor so his is a blunderbuss with nautical shape language. I kind of made the butt like a fish tale, the muzzle is an open fish mouth, with some whale bone and brass materials. Giatta is an animamcer which means she studies and manipulates souls. It’s a whole science in Avowed. So her weapon is more like a tool. Doubled as a weapon.

These were a lot of fun to do. Sharing also some of the 3D models and some sweet in-game shots. Enjoy and thanks for looking friends!

These are some paintings I did for Avowed. Not concept paintings, but actual game asset paintings that were framed and hung up in castles and homes in the game. Since painting assets were fairly limited, these can be found all throughout the game! Wanting to make them look like actual paintings, I made some extra effort in having some canvas showing through and thick paint areas look like they’re raised from the surface. I was looking at Hudson River school stuff for inspiration. Tough act to follow eh? Anyhoos…

I love Ray Bradbury’s book The Illustrated Man. It’s a collection of short scifi stories. My favorite story in the book is Fire Balloons. It was about how space travel may change religion and faith. How would a pastor spread the word of his faith to a sentient alien? Would sin look the same for them as humans? Would the rules of our religious books be the same rules for them?

I certainly don’t have the answers but I found the premise absolutely fascinating.

This is Father Peregrine. A Pastor who is interested and passionate about spreading the word of his religion to mars. He goes with a group of other Fathers to help civilize some of these human outposts on mars with booze, wild men, fast women, and God knows what other sins! They don’t know what to expect. Mars has recently been colonized. Like the Wild West. There are two sentient alien species also there. One is supposedly died out. The other are floating blue orbs. Or coined by locals “fire balloons.”

Father Peregrine is more interested to save the souls of these mysterious beings than the humans. Do they even have souls? What do their sins look like?

It’s a great read.

Here are some drawings I did of Father Peregrine. Scifi preacher guy basically lol. And some concepts of how the fire balloons could look. Wanted to do more on this but I have other ideas in my head to draw other things so just wanted to get this out.

Avowed concept art incoming!! Firstly here is Inquisitor Lodwyn. She is the main baddy of the game. It was an honor getting to help design her and she came out super bad ass! More art to come.
