A moving reception to our Pride 🌈 recital for @wigmore_hall yesterday where we celebrated the love between a woman and her gay friend as their lives interweave the ups and downs. Around Schumann’s iconic Frauenliebe und leben we heard prompts and responses by Ned Rorem, Jonathan Dove, Britten, Copland, @jenniferhigdon1 ,Balfe, Poulenc @houghhoughx2 and three new songs written for us by the wonderful @nathanjdearden What a privilege to share the stage on such an occasion with my longtime song buddy @nickythespence and new partners @clarepresland @robrinder Happy memories @gaylondonlife @classicalprideuk @prideinlondon #music #friendship #love @classicfm @gaytimes @trinitylaban taken in Wigmore Hall by @andrewm_o

Sometimes a concert comes along that brings together a lot of important strands to life. I was privileged to join @rebecca_evans_soprano as ever, but this concert marked Richard Burton’s centenary with his grandaughter and family in attendance and in our home town. Particularly touching for me was performing Rusalka’s Song to the Moon with Rebecca and hearing from so many members of the audience whom my wonderful Mum had taught and / or put the fear of God into; all of them loving her. Thanks to the organisers for their tireless work to bring all of this together to mark the birth of true Welsh great. What a night ! Great too that Rebecca and I have our official Christmas card image sorted for 2025 too (see pic) @bbccymruwales @visitwales @welsh.musicguild @waicymruwales @rwcmd @cardiffunimusic #richardburton #wales #opera #soprano #piano #puccini #ivornovello #welsh @bafta @baftacymru @trinitylaban taken in Neath by @andrewm_o

Delighted to be bringing Constanze to the inaugural concert series at @orangetreetheatre with the wonderful Jane Asher and @fflurwynsoprano Our concert takes us into the Mozart home, with Jane as Mozart’s widow, looking back on their life and, of course, his extraordinary music, much of which she sang. One of the absolute greats is 50 today. The first friend I recall making and still my ride or die. I couldn’t imagine life without him and love this face (both of them)! Happy birthday @pauljones000 #friend ❤️ by @andrewm_o

In my mind (bless!) my serve is blistering. The reality is that anyone facing it could say @martinanavratilova 3-4 times over the duration it takes the ball to cross the court. Never mind, we had a lot of fun every day. @gusbrooke @mati_bw9320 @ned.kelly11 @luizaugustocandiota #tennis #provence #delusion taken in Provence, France by @andrewm_o

How was this only a few days ago? How?! Much needed escape to see the 4A to my 4b @julietrosenfeld and a premier cru (!) of lovely people. Great chats @4dbrooke @mati_bw9320 @ned.kelly11 , delicious sun downers, pool time and ruthless daily doubles with @gusbrooke proving the perfect Pam Shriver to my @martinanavratilova as we conquered all before us (occasionally) “Let them make the mistakes, Martina” were his sage words, which still make me laugh. Such trips are precious ❤️ #france🇫🇷 #provence #friends #tennis taken in Provence, France by @andrewm_o

We went to a marvellous party. In fact, two, thanks to @buxtonfestival and @jamconcert_uk and some brilliantly receptive audiences to our ‘Roaring 20s’ concert. The colossal amount of work that goes into any festival - year long planning and prep for often just one short but brilliant week - is staggering. The team at JAM @johnfrederickhudson @edwardarmitage @profbgb @jamesaburn @anthonyewhitecomposer and crew was incredible. Thank you for giving us such a kind welcome and support throughout. Similarly, at Buxton where a wonderful lady,
who made some killer brownies last year, remembered how well they went down and produced some more for us. Christine Croshaw’s brilliant script explores a decade which, like ours now, emerged from war, a pandemic and a financial crash. The writing and musings of Zelda Fitzgerald, Dorothy Parker, PG Wodehouse and other commentators with songs by Gershwin, Cole Porter, Noel Coward, Ivor Novello, Liza Lehmann and many others took us through a decade of wit, gossip, parties and intrigue. Until…the party was over. Working with @xander.armstrong is always an absolute pleasure. As was performing with the exquisite @madeleinemulhall @madeleinecshaw for the first time. Perhaps, when life gets tricky for us in the 2020s we might take a lead from Zelda Fitzgerald who remembered: ‘The Flapper awoke from her lethargy of sub-deb-ism, bobbed her hair, put on her choicest pair of earrings and a great deal of audacity and rouge and went into the battle.’ #music #song #1920s #piano #pianist @classicfm @newbury_festival @llandeilofestivalofmusic2026 @sirnoelcoward @ivor_novello_fan @thesavoylondon @savoytheatreldn @musicmalling @northnorfolkmusicfestival @cowbridgemusicfestival @lichfieldfest @harrogatefestivals @kingsplacelondon @dorothylovesnewyork by @andrewm_o

Alun Hoddinott would have been 97 today.

One of the leading British composers of his generation, Hoddinott devoted enormous energy to promoting Welsh culture, inviting figures of the arts world to Cardiff, from Britten and Pears, Stockhausen and Messiaen, to John Piper and Dame Barbara Hepworth.

My connection with Hoddinott began having completed my first degree at @cardiffunimusic @cardiffuni My dissertation tutor mentioned Hoddinott at 70 was being made by @bbc and a researcher was needed.

I interviewed with @emyrafan and his wife Mair who, in a kind fit of madness, employed @alexjonesthomson and me to interview, research and film Hoddinott. I spent a year getting to know Alun and Rhiannon, accompanying them around the UK. For me, it was a musical awakening; and, in Alex, I made a friend for life.

I came to London to study at the @royalacademyofmusic with his music still in my ears. Each half term I returned to Wales and visited the Hoddinotts, whose hospitality became a cherished part of my life. My relationship with Alun continued until he died in 2008. I had a FaceTime with Rhiannon last week.

As we approach his centenary, I hope we hear much more of his orchestral music: international in language, form and invention, yet unmistakably Welsh in its evocation of the landscape and melodic character of Wales.

The music here is Hoddinott’s ‘Noctis equi’: Poème for Cello and Orchestra, commissioned by the @londonsymphonyorchestra for Alun’s 60th birthday concert at @barbicancentre written for and recorded by the great Rostropovich @cello_society @theviolinchannel . Typically, Hoddinott was inspired by text for this score: Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus, a meditation upon the cruel passing of time and inevitability of the end.

O lente, lente currite noctis equi
“O slowly, slowly run, horses of the night.”

Cysgu yn dawel, hen ffrind.

So good to get the band together again for another of our Jane Austen concerts. We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful setting and wonderful audience at @kew.wakehurst An added bonus was being able to walk the gardens on a sunny day and happen across Henry Moore sculptures in our break. It’s always a lot of fun taking a turn around the room with my very own Lady Catherine de Burgh and Elizabeth Bennett @nina.wadia @claireboothsings for these concerts, which reveal Jane as much away from her brilliant books as through them #janeausten #concerts #words #music #pianist @janeaustenshouse @janeaustensocietyuk @jafestivalbath @hayfestival @haymusicevents by @andrewm_o

It was a privilege to give the first public performance of Constanze with the legend that is Jane Asher at Frinton Summer Theatre. 🎭🎶 @frintonsummer

Constanze brings Mozart’s widow, who outlived Wolfgang by some 40 years, vividly back into the room, looking back on her remarkable life.

The evening weaves together immortal arias including Porgi amor, Dove sono and Ach, ich fühl’s, alongside Mozart’s charming and intimate songs, the Et incarnatus est which Constanze first sang, alongside fragments of solo and other works, creating an intimate portrait of the man, his music and the extraordinary woman who shared his life.

Script by Tim Coates.

An enormous thank you to @hollyr.brown who stepped in at the very last minute and sang beautifully.

We have quite a number of confirmed dates for Constanze at major festivals and venues around the UK in 2026/27, with more to be announced soon.

And what a wonderful festival Frinton Summer Theatre is. We were so beautifully looked after by Clive and his team, and thoroughly enjoyed being part of this special annual summer festival. We also caught a brilliantly sharp performance of @stevenwmoffat The Unfriend as part of the festival. A great way to round off the day!

If you haven’t discovered Frinton’s superb annual summer festival, please explore it. There’s a wonderful range of theatre and performances, all in a wonderfully welcoming setting; and, by the sea!

We can sometimes see and hear the word genius too easily.
But with Mozart, we can say it on the hour, every hour. ✨
