Here’s a sneak peak into the origami assemblage process, arranging hundreds of origami cranes in a hypnotic pattern. Each crane is folded from hand-made Japanese papers. Next step is boxing in a custom acrylic case. #Origamiart #Origami #Torontoartist #HandmadeArt #Artprocess taken in Toronto, Ontario by @andrewwangart

I’m excited to share that I’ll be part of The NTGA – This Is Us at Leslie Grove Gallery, running from September 16 to October 4, 2026.

The exhibition brings together 20 artists from the North Toronto Group of Artists collective in a juried group show. It’s a departure from our traditional fall art tour and sale, but this year, everything comes together in one place. One stop to experience a diverse collection of work from artists across the collective.

Opening Reception
Thursday, September 17
6:00–8:00 PM
Leslie Grove Gallery

I’m Andrew Wang, a Toronto-based mixed media artist specializing in Origami Assemblage. My work brings together hundreds of hand-folded origami birds and flowers to create compositions filled with texture, colour, movement, and meaning. Through these pieces, I explore different kinds of journeys, from migration and encounters with new cultures to more personal stories of transformation and transcendence.

For This Is Us, I’ll be exhibiting two works:

Blue-Green Venturi
An assemblage of origami cranes arranged in a flowing composition inspired by Bernoulli’s explanation of compressible flow through a venturi tube.

Blooming Together
Composed of 108 origami lotus flowers folded from different Japanese paper patterns; it celebrates the beauty of our collective individuality.

Come see the work in person and experience how individual folds become part of a larger story.

My newest portrait—can you guess who it is?

Composed of hand-folded origami lotus flowers and cranes, each piece is crafted from richly patterned Japanese papers. This work captures Olympic freestyle skiing phenom Eileen Gu—an icon whose influence reaches far beyond sport.

While her impact on young Asians around the world is undeniable, what struck me most was the universality of her story. At @artistprojectto, people of all ages and backgrounds instantly recognized her—not just her face, but what she represents: excellence, identity, and possibility.

@eileengu, among your many accolades, you are now immortalized in contemporary art.

Follow these salmon into the Breezeway at @humbertownshoppingcentre and you’ll be treated to a spectacular display of form, movement, light, and colour.

Each fish began as a flat sheet of plastic, folded using origami principles and layered with dichroic film that transforms light into shifting bands of colour. As you move around the installation and as the light changes throughout the day, the salmon constantly evolve, revealing new reflections and unexpected hues. No two moments are ever quite the same.

The Staging depicts the annual spawning migration of Chinook salmon. Before tackling each challenge on their journey upstream, the fish gather at river mouths and below waterfalls, collecting strength before making the next leap forward. I first witnessed this remarkable phenomenon along the Humber River by the Old Mill and was struck by the determination of these fish and the wonder that this natural cycle continues to unfold within our busy city year after year.

Salmon are believed to return to the very waters where they were hatched, imprinted somehow with a sense of home. Their return journey is an extraordinary struggle, travelling vast distances, navigating obstacles, and overcoming powerful currents.

For me, this work is also a reflection on our own journeys. We all encounter moments where we pause, gather our strength, and prepare ourselves for the next challenge ahead. Where we come from helps shape who we are, but it is perseverance that carries us forward.

Thank you to @firstcapitalreit for commissioning this work and for trusting me with my first large-scale hanging installation. 🙏

With help from students Maia Girardo, Linda Pan and Sadie Tseng, learning from the next generation.

We’re excited to share the launch of The Staging, a new public art installation at Humbertown Shopping Centre, adding to our national art program and making this the 34th art piece in the program.

Created by artist Andrew Wang as part of First Capital’s Art Program, The Staging draws inspiration from the annual migration of King Salmon along the Humber River. The installation features thirty origami-inspired salmon sculptures crafted from translucent, iridescent plastic, suspended to evoke the moment when salmon gather before continuing their journey upstream. Additional sculptures extend through the corridor and Breezeway, creating an immersive experience that guides visitors through the space.

This striking installation celebrates the natural history of the local area while reinforcing our commitment to creating vibrant, engaging community spaces through public art.

Congratulations to Andrew Wang!

Andrew has won the Technical Excellence Award in the Contemporary category of the SCA’s 58th Juried Exhibition, “HOME,” for his artwork Metropolis — a 60” x 80” x 4” diptych of folded paper, mounted on wood and encased in an acrylic case.

In his own words:

“Andrew unearths great journeys through origami assemblage, influenced by his experience as a second-generation Canadian. ‘We are keenly aware of our “otherness,” wondering if we truly belong. I fold hundreds of origami birds to honour the hardships and sacrifices made by my parents’ generation. As I lay each bird in its place, I realize that the journey continues — I am still finding my way, to be accepted, by others, by myself.’

The process is a cathartic, meditative practice — always striving for perfection, taking joy in the completion of each small task, the culmination of thousands of motions to create something greater than the sum of its parts.

Metropolis celebrates the place I call home: a great city created with various boroughs full of diversity and the flow of people, in, out, and between, like a living organism. Each borough is distinct in its own character. It celebrates the community and the individual journey of finding home.”

Congratulations, Andrew, on this outstanding achievement! 👏
