Why we love the Pear Cut diamond 🍐 Also known as the teardrop diamond, the pear cut is a blend of the marquise and the traditional round diamond. This beautifully unique cut can be found in a variety of styles ranging from slim to long, and it is often paired alongside other diamonds or gemstones. The history of the pear cut diamond is also the history of one of the most famous jewelers—the Flemish diamond cutter Lodewyk van Bercken. Around the mid-15th century, van Bercken invented a new method of polishing diamonds, a wheel called the scaif. This polishing wheel would completely change the diamond industry by making more intricate faceting possible. With the scaif, van Bercken made incredible advances in symmetry and brilliance. All of these achievements led to the creation of the first pear cut diamond, a truly revolutionary design! Although the pear cut was originally criticized for wasting too much of the rough stone, it would later gain popularity and prestige as one of the more difficult cuts to achieve.
