Dear friends of Dana,

I am sorry to share that Dana Fink passed away at home on Saturday, July 18 due to cancer. She was with family and her two loyal companions, Wednesday and Dorothy, when she passed. Dana devoted her career to advancing the rights and well-being of disabled people and older adults. She will be remembered by her family and friends for her determination, commitment to social justice, adventurous spirit, love of food and travel, and incisive wit.

Family and friends plan to celebrate Dana's life in private ceremonies in Washington D.C. and Athens, Georgia. We ask folks to give the family space as they mourn and utilize Caring Bridge or the obituary page to share your thoughts. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to @canineorg or @disabilityculturelab, organizations dedicated to dismantling ableism and advancing autonomy for disabled people, missions that resonated deeply with Dana.

This has been one of the hardest years in recent memory. It was such a necessary joy to get out of DC and celebrate my birthday and 15 years of friendship with the incomparable @jaysofein (who is not on the socials enough to see this)

Because the auto captions are not great and I'm still learning how to open caption, here is a full transcript: "Hi everyone, I'm Dana and more importantly, this is Wednesday. Wednesday is my service dog and the service she provides is that folks are way more likely to smile at a dog than a person in a wheelchair. Wednesday came with her name because she came from a charitable organization, and you don’t get to be choosy with charity. She follows many commands, one of which H-U-R-R-Y to go to the bathroom, I just think is rude AF. She should go at her own pace.

Speaking of not having your boundaries respected, I’ve been visiting my family of origin a lot
lately. Like I was just at a bar mitzvah with my mostly Zionist family the weekend we bombed Iran. (Well not just. We filmed these jokes a few months ago.) Thebombing happens overnight and my first encounter of the day is at the hotel breakfast buffet – already a lawless place I’m unshowered, in pajamas because it’s one of those “wheelchair accessible” showers where the water doesn't quite meet to the fixed bench. You get a lot more moisture from the Metro ceilings. A toddler is manning the toaster roller thing with a fork, but it’s plastic, so by @andthekitchenfink

@elmina.dc is always a lovely experience but today featured TWO Top Chefs @chefericadjepong and @cheftristenepps

While there was no injera shrimp toast on the menu, it did not disappoint, including my first taste of fufu! Bought the tix before I was RIFed so I'll be using memories of this meal to get by for awhile by @andthekitchenfink

A lot of times when I look at accessible dream home inspo, people have these sprawling ranches but I live in a one bedroom condo in the city, so I want to see more small spaces accessibility. Here's a tiny tour of my kompact kitchen from an instant roll-under prep station to my over-stove mirror. What are your small space access hacks?

I have contacted @eventsdc, the organizer of Passport DC the last several years about this issue and have received no response. I use a wheelchair and have a service dog. Because the ADA does not require international embassies to accommodate either, the event (pre-Events DC?) used to include accessibility information on the map. As you can imagine, it is terribly disappointing to arrive at most to find I cannot access them. Having that info in advance helps me to plan to have a more equal experience. @clockoutdc @popville @730dc please help spread the word.
