Thank you to all who joined for “In the Wild: Drawing from Nature”. Super impressed with everyone’s willingness to do a bit of a silver pen trust fall! Thank you @aspendesignconference for the invitation and @hextongallery & @aspencollectivegallery for hosting.

Here is the quote I shared from from Rick Rubin’s The Creative Act:

“Though we can’t change what it is that we are noticing, we can change our ability to notice. We can expand our awareness and narrow it, experience it with our eyes open or closed. We can quiet our inside so we can perceive more on the outside, or quiet the outside so we can notice more of what’s happening inside.

We can zoom in on something so closely it loses the features that make it what it appears to be, or zoom so far out it seems like something entirely new.

The universe is only as large as our perception of it. When we cultivate our awareness, we are expanding the universe.

This expands the scope, not just of the material at our disposal to create from, but of the life we get to live”. by @andy.millner

Andy Millner has been drawing to understand the world since childhood. His work creates a kind of parallel landscape, bringing together drawn, natural, handmade, and machine-made elements in flattened compositions that seem to exist somewhere between memory, observation, and invention. Without a single viewpoint or traditional sense of light and shadow, his landscapes ask us to look closely—and to wonder whether what we are seeing is old or new, handmade or digital, real or imagined.

Born in St. Louis in 1967, Millner studied drawing, painting, and sculpture at the University of Michigan before beginning a career as a union scenic artist in theater, television, and film. The imaginative problem-solving of creating alternative worlds continues to inform his practice today. His work has been exhibited widely and is held in collections including the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Saint Louis Art Museum, and the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art, as well as numerous private and corporate collections. taken in Aspen, Colorado by @andy.millner

Andy Millner

Andy Millner’s work creates a parallel world, blending drawn, natural, handmade, and machine-made elements. His landscapes, devoid of shadows or a single viewpoint, unify years of observation and drawing into flattened compositions.

These pieces challengeviewers to determine if they are old or new, machine-made or handmade, embodying a "floating world" that may never have existed. This highlights the impermanence of our presence and our complex relationship with the natural and artificial environments.
