A movie I saw as a kid led me to a friendship with someone generations apart from me.

I think that’s part of the magic of filmmaking. Stories can collapse the distance between people who might otherwise believe they have very little in common.

Sorry my camera work is so shaky. I’m learning that the most valuable person in the room isn’t always the one with the best answer. Sometimes it’s the person who asks the question that gets everyone thinking.

I’m starting to think the point of preparation isn’t to make sure everything goes according to plan.

It’s to understand what you’re trying to accomplish well enough that you can adapt when it doesn’t.

Most of this checklist exists because at some point in my career, I didn’t ask.

Role. Rate. Hours. OT. Payment terms. Location/travel. Crew. Equipment. Color. And this is all after the questions about the creative.

I’ve learned not to assume we’re all operating from the same expectations.

Have the conversation before the job. Get it in writing.

One of the most important things I’ve learned about leadership happened on an ice road in the Arctic Circle.

Being calm doesn’t mean you aren’t scared. Sometimes it means understanding that your fear doesn’t need to become everyone else’s fear.

Giving credit and taking responsibility aren’t opposites.

Every department contributes something to the image, and some of my favorite ideas have come from collaborators.

But part of being a cinematographer is taking responsibility for how all of those choices ultimately come together in the frame—and making sure they’re serving the director’s vision.
