I volunteer at a local hospital and have for a number of years. I will not name the hospital as this is not their fault… it’s a fault of the entire system. Here’s the long and short:
On my way to my shift, I saw a woman in a garden in a rather odd position. Turns out she was a patient in my hospital… curled up in a garden. I took a picture of her and the street signs. Before you jump, I cannot unilaterally confront her as I am not a law enforcement officer, nor am I a healthcare provider. I took the pictures with the intent of discovering if she was indeed a patient who “wandered”.
My volunteer colleagues jumped to attention when I arrived at the hospital and offered me assistance in getting more info about this woman. That was the last source of support I encountered. I discovered she was in emergency. I spoke to nurses, security, EMT, and police in the emergency. I want to make clear, I am not assigning blame to the nursing staff or any medical staff in the hospital, they are already overtasked. There is nothing they can do at this point. I approached a paramedic already busy who was sympathetic and offered to go check when she had an opportunity. Then, I spoke to the police.
I showed two police officers sitting in emergency the picture of the woman and where she was and asked if they can help check on her and bring her back. I was greeted with a dispassionate gaze from both (as they looked up from their phones) and they told me to “call 911.”
Every single point of touch for help was met with either helpless sympathy or simply disregarded. The most action I got was from my fellow volunteers who DONATE THEIR TIME.
• All the rules and protocol in the books did nothing for this woman
• The people paid to assist are under-supported and overworked
• The police—once again—didn’t blink when asked for help (knowing I was a volunteer) blew me off
The woman found her way back to the emergency department. No help from the system tasked to help her. The system tasked and paid to intervene found the rules more important than the humanity.
The unpaid volunteers jumped to action. That’s why the system is broken.

Russell Alldread (AKA Michelle DuBarry) has passed. Anyone who has and had any kind of relationship with Toronto's Gay Community knew or knew of Russell... especially as Michelle DuBarry. I knew Russell casually for decades. A few years ago we worked together in a little project to get him/her on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. You may have seen the billboards and transit ads. Russell was a character, a stalwart in Toronto's gay scene. A drag trailblazer, and a monument to the gay experience. He lived a long, fascinating and memorable life.
