Trail Faces VOL 2

Juan Manuel.

I was hiking up a pass where I met Juan, we communicated using google translate and a mix of very broken English and Spanish/Basque. I managed to get out an eskerrik asko.

Although it was a very broken conversation it was really special. There is truly no barrier to communcation with one another.

Juan typed this into google translate as we said our goodbyes. “Gracias por tu filodofia yeducacion y respuesta con la naturaleza”

It translates to “Thank you for your philosophy and education and response with nature”.

Trail faces in a series of portraits taken in the backcountry.

I wanted to document those who I connect with. Since we are all on a similar journey, to start and finish somewhere.

A simple sounding task, yet a completely complex one.

This will be a life long project i will continue to pursue wherever i am in the world.

VOL 2. Is the product of 39 days of hiking, across the length of the Pyrenees in Spain, on the GR11 Trail. A total distance of 886km, and over 48,000 metres of elevation gain.

Big feelings of isolation maybe sometimes as well, days without seeing anyone. Even when you run into people you never end up actually walking with anyone as you’re just passing a town or a cabin. I think i’ve walked with one person (Hans) the entire trip for 4 days, and then with Kiki & Lea for 2 hours along a road!

Maybe a little counter intuitive, but i’ve been walking less km’s most days as i’m trying to savour and enjoy most of it now as it’ll be over soon.

The swamps and mud is kinda never ending, i’ve walked with wet feet every single day. There has not been a single day where my feet have been dry while walking. I’m learning to embrace it now, rain or sun, it’s the same.

Overall maybe not feeling as fucked as I think I am! taken in Norway by @andyjcob

8 days self supported on the Larapinta.

35 degree days, lots of flies, and a very heavy pack.

having a fly net on for multiple hours of the day is very disorientating.

I met Sam on day 4 after i’d woken up from a 1 hour power nap at Section 4/5 Junction. We pushed on into the night to Hugh gorge swimming in the dark.

In July of 2024, at age 20, Andy Jacob set out to cross the entirety of the Spanish Pyrenees, from Irun in the Basque Country to Cap De Creus, Catalonia. Spanning the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, 886 kilometers, 39 days and over 48,000 meters of elevation gain.

The journey was documented on an Olympus OM2n, shooting over 21 rolls of Kodak Portra 800. This experience was a pivotal moment in the young man’s life. These are images of wanderlust and of coming of age; discovery of one’s self in the mountains and the wilderness.

The book contains 60 pages of images and journal entries documenting the adventure. Injuries and hardships, the highs and lows, peace and solitude.

To celebrate, the book will be launching with an exhibition at Halide Supply November 21st, 7:00PM - Late.
