Our last Masters Australian Championships medalist.
Helena Gordon claimed a close Bronze in the sprint, then powered to an early lead for our Silver medallist relay team on the first day of competition. But Helena’s goal all season has been the Beach Flags, spending all season putting it to our open competitors at training. This showed on the 2nd day of competition where she dominated every run to claim Gold. Her 7th Australian Gold medal in Masters Beach Flags. An absolute beast in training, showing our squad what true dedication and commitment looks like every week. Congratulations Helena. by @andyosteo

Day 2 of Masters competition at Aussies started with the 2km beach runs, Lee-Anne Nelson grabbing Silver to add to her 2x silvers yesterday (unfortunately no photos, but always a weapon in the 2km) Then we moved to Beach flags with a 9th for Stacey Bolton, & Leanne Milford-Ferguson after their Silver in the relay yesterday, 4th for Andy Gordon, unfortunately Owen Richards was unable to compete after getting collected on his motorbike riding home from state. We finished the day with a dominant GOLD medal for Helena Gordon, never in doubt and picking up her 7th Australian Gold medal. Now looking forward to our open team taking to the sand. by @andyosteo

Introducing Andy Gordon. After growing up in England and doing Karate as a kid, Andy moved to Australia when he was 24 years old. Only joining Surf Life Saving when he put his kids in to nippers in 2003. Before starting to compete himself on the beach in 2008. As an osteopath Andy is always sought after during and after training for help with niggling injuries, often sacrificing his own training to help others. Something coach Simon Harris is trying to minimise since Andy joined Surfers Paradise Beachies. Whilst the squad certainly appreciates the help, Simon wants Andy to focus on his own training while at sessions. His favourite event is the Beach flags where he has had his best results. With a Qld state gold medal in flags and a bronze at the Australian Championships in flags. Andy loves the physicality of training, the weight training and travelling more than the actual competition or results. Dedicating his life to training and staying fit at 60 years young. With wife Helena, Andy travels to World Life Saving Championships internationally where he has seen some of his best results. Winning a bronze medal in the flags in the Netherlands in 2016, following that up with a World Gold medal in the relay in Italy in 2022. Andy’s goals for this season is to medal at the Australian Championships in flags, then carry a good offseason in to the 2026 World Lifesaving Championships in South Africa and win a medal.
Andy is the other half of our ‘matchy-matchy budgie smuggler twins’ with wife Helena, but it’s not just the budgie smugglers, they also have matching running shoes and tracksuits at training. He has definitely been a welcomed member and valuable asset at our training sessions, even if Helena thinks he talks to much 🤣 Perhaps enjoying the social side of the sport, more than the results. by @andyosteo

Introducing Helena Gordon.
Helena was a star at trampolining and tumbling as a teenager, representing Australia and clinching a bronze medal at the World Championships for tumbling. But it wasn’t until she signed her kids up for nippers that she first experienced Surf Life Saving. With daughter Brooke Grono winning an Australian Gold medal in the U15 Beach Flags in 2008 in Perth. As her kids got older Helena decided to join in the training as it looked like fun after not competing in sport for a long time. Helena started competing in masters sprints and flags in 2012. Flags being her favourite event as she had natural strength and explosive speed from her gymnastics background.
Helena has achieved a lot in her short time in the sport and considering she only took up the sport for the first time as a master.
Since starting Helena has won 6 Australian Gold medals in masters beach flags, and 3 World Gold medals in beach flags. A major highlight being when she achieved ‘the double’, flags and sprint Gold at the World Lifesaving Championships in Italy in 2022.
But it wasn’t just gold, if she didn’t win, she made the podium, with 4 silver and 2 bronze in Aussie beach flags to go with her 6 Gold medals, with 1 silver and 2 bronze in sprints, then World championships 2 silvers to go with her 3 Gold medals in flags, 1 Gold and 3 bronze medals in sprints. Since joining the Surfers Paradise Beachies in the off season Helena has been training house down, finding a new level that will be dangerous for her competition this year. She puts it all on the line at every session and leads the younger members by example with her work ethic. Helena’s goals for this season are to win her 7th Australian Masters beach flags title, then another hard offseason before taking out her 4th World masters beach flags title in South Africa. With the way she is training a pushing we have no doubt she is capable of achieving these goals. It’s not just her winning ways that gets her noticed on the beach, people would notice her ‘matchy-matchy’ budgee smugglers with husband Andy. So many pairs of matching togs 👏👏 by @andyosteo

Cant express how proud i am of my wife competing today in the masters beach flags and coming away with a silver. Despite all the set backs from adominal surgery straightt after worlds, which layed her on her back for 2 months then another 2 months of rehabilitation and learn how to walk and jog again!
Then with 8 weeks to go Labrum and adductor tear 4 weeks rest and yet more rehab most days struggling to even walk, only had 2 flag tempo sessions before competing.
So just to make it to the line was a mirical !!
Her determination and focus ceases to amaze me😍in my eyes u r a winner. I know you will back stronger and quicker than ever next year Thanks for the support of our flags coach the great Simon Harris and the surfers crew 👊👊 taken in Kirra Beach by @andyosteo
