This Sunday - Oct. 11: Andy Wheelock & WHEE3TRIO with Gilad Hekselman

A rich blending of Jazz, Afro-Latin, and West African musical inspirations are at the heart of drummer Andy Wheelock’s melodic and joyfully dancing compositions with his latest project, the WHEE3TRIO. While using the timbre and pentatonic offerings of the wooden xylophone-like Ghanaian Gyil as a composing tool, Wheelock pictured the inventive voices of pianist Walter Gorra and bassist Gonzalo Teppa to orchestrate sweeping landscapes, intricate dance rhythms, and Afro Pop-tinged street party tunes that are full of joy, and rhythmic surprises.

@gonzaloteppa - Bass

Special Guest, @ghex - Guitar

The School of Music was incredibly fortunate to welcome back several esteemed alumni, who graciously returned to share their expertise by conducting masterclasses for our current students. In addition to this invaluable educational experience, they also delivered an exceptional concert, generously sponsored by Dr. Campbell, the Dean of the College of the Arts and Media.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Lara Brooks, Dr. Robert Brooks, Dr. Myles Boothroyd, Dr. Kristen Zelenak, Dr. Andy Wheelock, and Mina Son for their remarkable performance! 🔥☝♾️

The world lost one of a kind today. Hugh Willey was one of the most important people in my musical journey and today at 96 years old, went home to the sunny side of the street.

I will never forget the random day sometime around 2005, in the band room at Sutton’s Bay HS, this incredibly jovial older gentleman strolled in humming Pennies from heaven and asked if he could play us some jazz. He asked if anyone knew how to use brushes and I said yes (I didn’t even know I was lying). From that day on, I went anywhere at anytime that he needed a drummer. I learned constantly from him through those years and I owe so much to the mentorship and friendship he so generously gave me as a young musician.

The picture is from one of my first summers playing with Mr. Willey and the video is from the last time I got to make music with him last spring. My band was on tour in the Midwest and he was able to come to the show at @the.alluvion and he sang the head out on I Hear a Rhapsody.

I am forever grateful to have known Mr. Willey and the stomp from his left foot will live on in my hi-hat and my heart.

We will play again. Until then, anytime it rains, I will hum a chorus of Pennies from Heaven for you. by @andywheelockmusic

Well I haven’t added up the time or money and……I’m probably not going to, but after a few+ months, my DIY sauna is up and running! It heats up fast and stays hot long after it’s off. We got ourselves some super hip sauna hats and we are spending many nights a week sweating it out! The boys and I tried our hand at a diy build video which I’ll post later on for those of you interested in the step by step process.
