Both photographer George Hurrell and painter Tamara de Lempicka were influenced by Caravaggio’s mastery of “chiaroscuro,” the artistic technique of using sharp contrast between bright light and deep shadow. Hurrell treated the human face like a three dimensional sculpture. Lempicka’s art deco style with soft cubism brings to mind sleek Hollywood glamour of Hurrell, both working during the same era. Shown are classic black and white Hurrell photographs of Joan Crawford, a few of de Lempicka’s paintings, and a classic Caravaggio exemplifying his use of “chiaroscuro.”

“Nistor’s Eyes”. This was supposed to be a simple painting that became more involved. Completely my fault. On Ferragosto (August 15 in Italy where practically the entire country shuts down for holiday) while with a group of people at at Torre Del Lago beach club I noticed the brilliant hues of these eyes in the midday sun. I asked if I could take a photo. He probably thought this guy is pazzo (crazy). But I had done an earlier painting of gorgeous Paolo’s eyes (who I also met at Torre del Lago) that turned out spectacular - so I thought why not do another?

A friend at the art center asked if I was painting the actor Jason Momoa - and I see the similarity.

Now agosto seems a world away, and I am preparing to see my family in the U.S. Italia - I will be back. #malemodel #torredellago #andyzefferart #jasonmomoa #oilpainting by @andyzeffer

Questa settimana. Some simple pleasures. A friendly baristo offering complimentary fresh berries with my cafe. A sweet lady at the art center gifting me fresh basil from her garden. Arriving to find out figure drawing is canceled, so making the best of it sketching in Piazza Della Signora instead (and grabbing a gelato afterwards). Some places one travels exceed expectations. For me Assisi was such a destination. I was enthralled.

I am sharing a watercolor with ink pen painting of Basilica di San Francesco d’ Assisi. It is a vantage point from the woods below. There is a beautiful trail one can hike with spectacular views. I drew the Gothic font as an ode to the Gothic architecture, and I think that turned out sort of cool.

This past August I sort of unraveled. It was as though my brain melted and has been rife with distractions. I’ve been unfocused. Therefore I am glad to have finished this little piece, and I hope some of you find it pretty. #assisi #watercolor #andyzefferart #umbria #basilicaofsaintfrancisassisi by @andyzeffer

I almost didn’t make this little journey. Tomorrow is ferragosto in Italy. The time of year when Italians flee to the mountains and the sea.

I love summer and normally forge through the heat. Yet this year it has felt relentless, one heat wave after another. When parts of the city you live in resemble a ghost town, it doesn’t help. Guess you could say I was sort of in the throws of a mental slump.

Yet I’ve always wanted to go to Assisi, and got my butt together at the last minute - despite reading horror stories about the bus company online (it was just fine by the way).

To think I might have missed these magnificent views. Not to mention meeting wonderful people. Receiving Eucharist during mass at the basilica, then praying at tomb of Saint Francis. Shed tears seeing the remains of Carlo Acutis at Santa Maria Maggiore, and was in awe at the views from Rocca Maggiore.

I fell in love with Assisi. Italy has a way of picking me back up when I’m down. Allow me to share some of this beauty with you all. #assisi #umbria #italia #saintfrancisofassisi #estate by @andyzeffer
