My Long Way Back to Music, in a short Instagram post ;)

From childhood onwards, I found refuge and freedom in songs and singing. It was where I felt most at home. I’m sure many musicians can relate: if it weren’t for the music I was listening to, I wouldn’t be here anymore. Dramatic, but true.

In my 20s, I dreamed of studying jazz singing, which is what brought me to Berlin. But my life circumstances, combined with the competitive, testosterone-driven jazz and blues scene — and not being accepted into university — made me drop music completely. I didn’t just turn away from it, I shut that door and told myself that life, the universe, or whatever, didn’t want me to do it.

Instead, a bit to my own surprise, I applied and even got accepted into a dance program — even though I had little prior training, apart from CI. For years, I immersed myself fully in movement.

And then: just when I had finished my training and was ready to go out into the world teaching dance, life made a sharp (re)turn. A dance festival organizer — exactly the kind of person who might have opened that path further — kept asking me not to teach dance, but to lead singing circles.

What a cosmic joke. You want one thing, it doesn’t work, you drop it, you do something else instead — and then life says:
“Ah, you worked very hard to leave music behind and reinvent yourself? Cute. Now please sing.”

I was reluctant. But I also got goosebumps every time I said yes and sang with many voices in those circles.

Over time, my voice and musical dream began to resurface. I found myself balancing multiple worlds: Dance, Ceremony, Ritual, Sound Journeys, Shamanic Retreats — while slowly making space again for the Artist in me.

And now this is me growing up: including the signs into my decisions, not making them the “universe’s thorough plan,” and owning my choices, finally, at 45 LOL ;)

I have attempted to record an album several times within the past 20 years. This is my third one and now it is really happening!

6 more days to join the birth of my debut album COSMOSIS:

🔥 Out Now🔥 (sound on!)

“As you are” — my first single from COSMOSIS is finally here!

I wrote this song in October 2023,
when the Israel–Palestine conflict flared up again.

It came from sitting with grief,
not knowing how to hold the complexity
of our world in continuous conflict —
and the strange coexistence
of joy and guilt within it.

And with it, a new name is born:

ANEAR
like an ear — closeness, listening

This track already opens a slightly more electronic space,
even though the whole album won’t sound like this.

Tell me what you feel. I really want to hear.

The last 11 days to join this project…
or forever hold your peace. 😉

.

Infinite gratitude to @FamousGoldWatchStudios,
@cameron_james_laing and @bobspencerguitarist for producing and mastering this track. ❤️‍🔥
looking forward to continue this journey with you!

A little glimpse of what I’ve been up to alongside recording & producing COSMOSIS… 🌹

Bottling a carefully brewed small batch of my Voice Elixir: a signature tincture of Chilcuague, Propolis & Rose.
This has been a faithful companion throughout long studio days and recording sessions.

And with autumn settling in, it feels like the perfect time to give our voices and throats a little extra love.

This small batch is also helping me finance the final stretch of my album production… so every bottle supports the music! 🤍

For now, I’m keeping it local: no shipping, but you can pick it up from me in Kreuzberg near Görlitzer Park, or find me at the rare times I’m playing live.

20 ml · €22, 30 ml · €30, 50 ml · €45

Limited batch. Contains alcohol.
DM me if you’d like one. 🌹

Also: more COSMOSIS updates very soon…

ANEAR is the music project of Berlin-based vocalist, facilitator and interdisciplinary artist Anir Leben @anearmusic

Working at the intersection of music, embodiment and ritual, her performances draw on vocal transmission, relational awareness and the intelligence of the body to create immersive sonic experiences rooted in presence, connection and aliveness.

Influenced by ceremony and experiential voice work, she explores the voice as both instrument and embodied pathway into deeper connection with self, others and the living world.

Live at Play Temple on Thursday, July 2nd

Loves, just a little update: I’m doing okay 🙏💫

I’ve been out of the hospital for a little while now, and I’m healing. There’s still some emotional integration happening, but overall I’m doing well.

I’ve been staying a few days with friends in the countryside, and today I finally got back to practicing my music. It feels exciting… and a little scary.

This Thursday I’ll be playing at @mxgili’s legendary Play Temple for the first time with some electronically infused sounds, and I can’t wait to share this new chapter with you.

More than anything, I’m grateful to slowly return to life beyond survival.

Thank you for all your love. 🤍

When You Ask for Divine Intervention
…and end up travelling through yet another underworld.

Last Saturday, the 13th, on my way to the studio to continue recording Cosmosis, I got into a car crash that wasn’t my fault.

The timing was absurd.

It was only the second day of a new morning practice. During one of the most challenging years of my life, I had begun asking Mary Magdalene for support. I don’t usually pray to specific figures, but the pull felt too strong to ignore.

That same day, on my way to record a song inspired by her that asks for divine intervention, I lost consciousness, woke up in hospital with a concussion and a head wound, and eventually had to say goodbye to the car I’d been using on a long-term loan, a car that had grown invaluable to me and my festival work.

This year, I’ve been navigating a constantly overstimulated nervous system: crowdfunding, heartbreak, old grief, the loss of my day job through another accident, and losing someone close through the arrogance of youth, which still leaves me heartbroken and angry. Just when I thought the worst was behind me, another underworld opened.

While midsummer is bursting into bloom and the world is expanding, I seem to be contracting even further.

When I handed the car over to the recycler before it was taken to the scrapyard, I noticed a tattoo on the man’s arm. It simply read: “Marie…”

It could mean something, or not.
But I can’t help seeing the handwriting of the fierce feminine in it.
Mary? Kali? Isis?

I’m not sharing this to invite pity or advice. I simply wanted to let you know where I’m at and why it’s been so quiet around me. Between doctor’s appointments, paperwork, concussion recovery, and trying to find a lawyer, my life keeps stripping away yet another layer of ease and comfort.

Perhaps this is what perimenopause has been preparing me for all along: the strange stage where the caterpillar has already dissolved into soup, but the butterfly hasn’t revealed itself yet.

I hope she’s as magnificent as the price of becoming her.

When you never meant to become the long-haired hippie girl singing in circle… until the shivers down your spine teach you otherwise 🤣
Grateful for 15 years of life knowing better:

This little tune came through while sitting with the question:
“What helps me believe in peace and love again?”

Excuse the stitched-together vibe of this reel… it wanted to keep the energy arc.

Hearts seen and heard here:
Thank you @uriatsur for your ongoing powerful work,
@yael_deckelbaum for your incredible music activism,
@jakob.recklinghausen for drumming and filming,
@joymatthiasleo for the violin playing, @eunyoung.moona.aina @we.embody.arts, adrianfiedler, @magiccarpetjourneys,

this is the new space here

as in
an ear / a near

a little closer to listening
a little deeper into musical relation

I’m letting go of @agile.arts

stripping back to my core
simplifying

voice as ritual
voice as relation
voice as mystery
unfolding

a space for creation
for artistry
for what moves through

and for your voice, too
