NO GENOCIDE PAVILION AT THE VENICE BIENNALE
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
ART WORKERS AGAINST ARMS

On 3 October, ANGA joins the national and international ports assembly in Genoa.

For months, dockworkers, students, youth movements and culture workers have been building toward an international day of strike action on Friday 30 October.

The call comes from dockworkers across Mediterranean ports. In solidarity with Palestine, they refuse war, militarisation and the drive by European ruling classes to rearm the war machine.

At the 61st Venice Biennale strike on May 8, we saw what’s possible when workers organise across sectors. Our struggles are connected. The same precarity that defines cultural work—short contracts, unpaid labour, no benefits, no job security—is what enables institutions to look away from genocide while artwashing their complicity and accepting toxic funding.

Dockworkers hold real power. They sit at the heart of the supply chain and can block arms shipments and shut the system down, as “Blocchiamo Tutto” showed across Italy last year.

ANGA will be in Genoa on 3 October. In solidarity with the people of Palestine and with dockworkers, we call on artists, curators and art workers at the Venice Biennale and everywhere to join the strike on 30 October against the war economy and the arms trade.

IT:

Ci siamo riusciti solo grazie a voi!

Abraham vive in tutti noi.

Per un giorno, siamo stati tutti Fenici.

Per un giorno, siamo stati tutti Anqa. by @angalliance

𝗪𝗲, 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗼𝗮 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗭𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀, are writing about New Zealand’s conduct at the 2026 Venice Biennale, supported by what we have learned from official information that has been released to us.

What that information reveals is a gap between what the public was told and what was decided in private. While the chair of Creative New Zealand (CNZ)’s governing body, the Arts Council’s Kent Gardner, publicly stated that they “𝘂𝗽𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗼𝗺 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗼𝗺 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘀”, almost everyone who was sent to Venice had been instructed in writing not to speak. CNZ’s own records describe that advice as being prepared “𝗶𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿.”

We are asking CNZ, its governing board the Arts Council of New Zealand Toi Aotearoa, and Paul Goldsmith, Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage, to answer immediately and publicly for that conduct.

The full letter is across these slides.

ARTWASHING GENOCIDE AT THE 83rd VENICE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

The 83rd Venice International Film Festival is currently in full flow and continues La Biennale’s veneer of business as usual within the upper echelons of the cultural sector.

This year the festival persists with normalisation, presenting the new film of Israeli director Amos Gitai who, at a festival press conference this weekend, advocated for “dialogue not boycott” while failing to denounce Israel’s genocide in Gaza or make any mention of Palestine.

Meanwhile hundreds of international filmmakers and artists, organised by Venice4Palestine, continue to call for concrete actions in support of Palestine. Their demands include transparency throughout the film industry supply chain and the suspension of agreements with entities and institutions linked to the Israeli government. The appeal is also supported by various Italian and international associations and collectives, including Global Sumud Flotilla, BDS Italia, Artists for Palestine Italia and France, FRACBI (French Coordination for the Academic, Cultural, and Sports Boycott of Israel), Artisti #NoBavaglio, AMLETA, UICD (Italian Union of Casting Directors), and Voci per la Palestina.

ANGA supports these demands which highlight the institutional complicity across all aspects of La Biennale’s cultural programming, as the Israeli flag flies at the Lido, and the Genocide Pavilion remains open in the Arsenale as part of the International Art Exhibition.

The promotion of dialogue and building bridges is an insult to Palestinians in a system that is complicit in Israel’s art washing and provides consistent cover for the genocidal settler colonial entity. by @angalliance

Venice 4 Palestine vi invita al panel
EPPURE GAZA CONTINUA A BRUCIARE

Introduce:
Giacomo Durzi, vice presidente Giornate degli Autori e sceneggiatore

Modera:
Silvia Pegah Scaglione, coordinamento V4P

Intervengono:
Francesca Albanese, relatrice speciale delle Nazioni Unite sui territori palestinesi occupati
Insaf Rezagui, ricercatrice associata presso l’Institut français du Proche-Orient
Enrica Rigo, team legale Global Sumud Flotilla
Saleh Bakri, attore
Josè Nivoi, USB Mare e Porti/CALP Genova

Con la partecipazione di:

MASAFER YATTA. UN LABORATORIO DI PULIZIA ETNICA
📍 Riva di Corinto, Venezia
📅 11 settembre 2026, ore 21:00

This week’s recommended reading is “On the Making of the May 8 Strike at the 61st Venice Biennale”, a sharp and layered reflection by the Art Not Genocide Alliance (ANGA) group @angalliance that documents the organizing behind the unprecedented cultural strike that brought artists, curators, technicians, educators, and art workers together in refusal of the normalization of genocide within one of the art world’s most prominent institutions. The essay situates the strike within a longer project of building durable infrastructures of solidarity, and offers an urgent account of what collective action can look like when it is grounded in political clarity and an unwavering commitment to Palestinian liberation.

The following slides are excerpts; to read the full essay, please visit e-flux at e-flux.com/notes.

At Venice Biennial 2026, the jury tried to exclude Israel over its committing genocide in Gaza and was forced to resign under legal threat. Artists and workers refused complicity, exposing the art world’s crisis of legitimacy.

From the Biennale to the streets: the struggle continues.

On 17 July, we stand with the mobilisation against the visit of U.S. Ambassador Tilman Fertitta, Trump’s representative in Italy, who arrives in Venice aboard his $450 million superyacht while the United States continues to arm, finance and politically shield Israel’s genocide in Palestine.

For us, this is not a separate struggle. It is part of the same political trajectory that has connected the strikes for Palestine in the autumn of 2025, the mobilisations in support of the Freedom Flotilla, and our campaign to boycott the Genocide Pavilion at the Venice Biennale.

Earlier this year, ANGA’s Guide to Complicity identified the United States as a central site of complicity, exposing the role of the U.S. state in enabling the genocide in Gaza and sustaining the infrastructures of colonial and imperial violence. Today, that same complicity docks in Venice in the form of a Trump ambassador celebrating “American values” aboard a $450 million superyacht.

We refuse the cultural normalisation of genocide. We refuse the militarisation of our cities. We refuse the capture of Venice by oligarchs, war profiteers and the representatives of imperial power.

From the boycott of the Genocide Pavilion to the protest against Fertitta, our message remains the same: no business as usual with genocide.

FREE PALESTINE. VENEZIA NON SI USA.

See you again in the streets of Venice. 17 July, Campo S. Zaccaria, 18:00. by @angalliance
