Decided to take advantage of the fact I go to a school in a capital city, and took a tour to the BBC Cymru Wales building 🌟

Tickets are affordable as a student and in my opinion, completely worth it. Different floors are dedicated to the different operations needed for the BBC – we visited the recording rooms, radio studios and THE broadcast room that I’ve seen on television countless of times.

What you might not know (because I didn’t) is that the news presenter is –for the most part– alone in the room, operating the camera and teleprompter all by themselves. The weather man may be in the corner, ready to go at a moments notice; but typically there is no camera crew, and whilst the presenter has a script – the weather guy operates purely on intuition and meteorologist jargon (it’s all a ploy to lengthen the live broadcast).

We had the chance to speak to a programme producer and she walked through her whole setup and what her role & responsibilities entail. Essentially, she operated alone, writing scripts for between news programs and trails, whilst acting as a mediator between production and audience. If the broadcast somehow went down, she would switch it to a live ‘technical fault announcement’ and do everything in her and her team’s power to get it back up and running. I had never seen the announcement on screen before, so it’s probably safe to say they have an incredibly robust system, or the BBC is run like the navy (most likely both).

I asked what happens if there is nation-wide breaking news –like when the Queen died, and she said that they would switch to the broadcast live to BBC UK-wide – where they would take over.

BBC Wales uses a hot desking system – where employees are not assigned seats or particular offices, but can work from anywhere within the main floors of the building. It sort of reminded me of university.

They had an archive section, dating back to when the BBC was created in 1922. It also featured all of their Pudsey plushies from every year. Their current one was dressed as Doctor Who, and on the top floor we could see a Doctor Who section with the costumes on mannequins and a Dalek (?). I’ve never seen Doctor Who. by @angecurates
