From being the shyest cat I’ve ever met to flying on a plane to come to TN and then becoming the sweet girl who gave us kisses and purrs- Sadie had quite the story arch this year.

We are very sad that it ended yesterday. Poor old bird could barely breathe, so we made the toughest decision and we put an end to her suffering. In the short time we had her, we were able to get her out of her shell, stop her from hiding & burrowing all the time and she developed serious feelings for @mikeypcomedy, always croaking at him to come to her living quarters downstairs for a spell.

We gave her the best two days we could, with treats and outdoor time and snuggles, until the vet came and we had to say goodbye. I fed her treats until she was sleepy and held her sweet head until she faded away. It comforts me to think that she had a better ending than what she would have had in Massachusetts and even though living with three kitties was a challenge, she healed us during her brief stay.

Happy Birthday grandson kitty. You’re 18 somewhere. It’s been a little downhill since you made your exit, but we are getting through it. The kitties we have now think you’re a God, we light candles to you and they pray at your altar. We’re gonna have your favorite meal tonight, tunas 🍣!!

Of all the things that broke my heart this week, this one hit hardest. Dad kept a book of my scribbles-a little girl practicing her name.
I wasn’t raised around him after I was six & we didn’t reconnect until I was 18. So much time lost. It was hard on both of us. When we met again, I was pulling away, eager to be grown & free of rules. He tried to set boundaries & “lay down the law”. We clashed, naturally. I was always working a mystery never solved. He always carried sadness. I didn’t know how to hold it. I wanted to start fresh, to make up for lost time, but it felt like we were always stuck at the beginning—to the unresolved pain. The alcoholism he struggled with didn’t make it easier. He was a broken man. I thought maybe I could heal that something in him. I came to learn I couldn’t, it was a cycle never broken. It was often easier to stay away than to keep having the same conversations.
At times, it seemed he was capable of being more lighthearted & happy with others than he was with me & my brother. I’m grateful others got that version of him, but my experience was more complicated—overshadowed by regret.
It’s not that we didn’t have good moments. It was just work for both of us, in a way we weren’t always equipped for.
Being around people who had close relationships with their families made me deeply aware of what I missed out on. I felt jealous of the comfort—of being held through hard times, celebrated in good ones, & having a clear sense of belonging & legacy.
I’m struggling to understand my dad’s legacy in my life. I take comfort that I carry his very best traits, even without being raised by him. I’m grateful for that.
In the end, he chose the bottle over his family. That’s incredibly painful & something to work through. I’m always making sense of our relationship, I’ll always be digging for the love there.

This little book felt like proof of that; a quiet treasure tucked away in the dust of his garage.

Dad, Tony, I hope your sadness is gone wherever you are. I’ll keep Sadie safe & fed & loved.

Thank you for the moments of joy you did give—gardening, jokes, Labyrinth on repeat, and all the quiet treasures.

@deaconsnewsouth our chef set this month features a charred strawberry blanc with a lacto fermented shallot mignonette. It’s a bit tart, very luscious, and paired with a glass of rosé, it’s sure to make the stars shine a bit brighter.
Come celebrate in our atrium upstairs @ Cliffs oyster bar where we’re serving this set on top of a Hearts Desire oyster from Massachusetts!
