Another Yorkshire drawing. I set up my little folding stool precariously on some raised rocks in the middle of the river Swale in Richmond under the Viaduct known as The Mercury Bridge. Mixed media on paper. Early work. Late 1980’s Happy Days.

This was the last drawing I did of Hambleton Hills and it’s titled ‘Out on the Yorkshire Moors’. Size 22ins x 30ins. This was exhibited and sold at the R.A Summer Exhibition 1988. Wherever it is now, like a lot of my work out there, I just hope it’s still being enjoyed.

A quick mixed media drawing of Rievaulx Abbey. One of several plein air drawings made on a working trip to Yorkshire late 1980’s.

I tried working up the Hambleton Hills drawings in a larger scale back at the studio. This is collage, paint and charcoal on paper. Size 4ft x 5ft. It was done in one go and although quite textural to me it remained structurally unresolved. Anyway I wasn’t happy with it. Developing drawings was never really my thing I just preferred the immediacy of working directly from life. Ultimately, as Gee Vaucher said ‘There is no authority but yourself’.

In the late 1980’s I spent a week painting in Yorkshire as part of a Fine Art Degree Course at St Albans College of Art making several quick plein air studies out on The Moors. This one is collage, paint and charcoal on paper. Size 16 inches x 20 inches. This one was never exhibited but was sold privately.

Making Art is a journey and I love to see how artists develop their work over time. Here is an early painting from 1904 by another well known artist who developed and refined his unique modernist work over many years.

Do you know who he is? by @angelaedmondsart

Another surprise painting by an artist better known for his abstract collages and reliefs made from ephemera. I loved this artist’s work but wasn’t aware of any paintings like this, painted towards the end of his life in exile in the Lake District where due to lack of income he painted such landscapes to sell to tourists.

I wrote a review for an exhibition of his more familiar work at Tate Britain many years ago when I worked for a magazine. The image of a collage on the front cover of the catalogue had been printed upside down and the catalogue was hastily withdrawn and republished after the press viewing. There are many cock ups in the art world but they aren’t often revealed.

Who is this artist?

Art is full of surprises, who do you think painted this beguiling little gem in 1899. The colours look quite different in every reproduction. This one is from a post by Waldemar Januszczak. The colours look heightened but it clearly shows the textures and brushstrokes. The little cup is delightfully metaphysical. by @angelaedmondsart

My memory of Rounton is included in the recent publication ‘Living Memories of St Albans Art College’ 2026 page 46. The book contains memories of past students and tutors of the Art College. I had no idea that they had the top image in their Archive. It made me laugh and I vaguely remember being asked to stand there as a part of someone’s installation but refusing to show my face. Do you blame me. The photograph was taken by Mike Adcock who was an enthusiastic and encouraging lecturer before later pursuing a career in music. He made the right move. I remember him playing music in the college courtyard one afternoon for a spontaneous little party with some of us dancing. The course leader Graham Boyd looked on aghast. I think he feared one of us might have a heart attack as this had happened to a male student the previous year.
