Sometimes, the folk band I play in holds evening practices at Polegate Windmill. It's all rather magical.A small team of volunteers works tirelessly on the Mill, which is now over 100 years old and Grade II listed. This Sunday, 26th July, the Mill is open for tea and cake, games, stalls and a raffle. There will be live music from Con Brio, and there has been mention of a steam train! Doors - and gates - open at 11.00am and close at 3.00pm.#polegatewindmill #ourheritage#gradeiilisted#summerfair#windmill by @angelaseaside

Thank you to Val and Alison who flagged up Rottingdean's exquisite Kipling Gardens. In the midst of a beautiful yet busy (and traffic-buffeted) village, they are an oasis of serenity and intimate loveliness. So many nooks and crannies, as archway after archway leads you into another little garden 'room.' Many beautiful and well- maintained seats to relax on with your picnic or book, well away from the madding crowd.Originally they actually were part of Rudyard Kipling's garden, but when he uprooted his family to Batemans they passed through various hands, ending up in the not-at-all caring hands of the last family who sold the house in 1980, with the garden (now an unkempt wilderness) being offered for housing development! 😱Rottingdean Preservation Society campaigned to raise £51,000 and bought the garden for the benefit of all. Huge credit to them - what a loss to us all that would have been!Easily reached on the 12 coastal bus service if like me you have no car. #rottingdeankiplinggardens by @angelaseaside

Lovely Rottingdean Village pond. In years gone by the pond was much affected by tides, being sometimes salty, plus the butcher in Whipping Post Lane would discard the unwanted remains of slaughtered animals in it. A grim place to be avoided I should think - but now a place of peace, wild flowers, ducks and butterflies. With the Kipling Gardens close by. But that is for tomorrow 🌳🌼🌸🐝🐞🦋🌳#rottingdean #villagepond#tookthebus#southdownsnationalpark#julysunshineless by @angelaseaside

Looking east, then west, along the Seven Sisters. I have lost count of the times I've walked these cliffs but familiarity does not breed contempt. The Downs are parched now - and have donned a mantle of Heatwave Khaki, much as they did in 1976. #sevensisterseastsussex #southdownsnationalpark #chalkcliffsofsussex #bluesea #julysunshine by @angelaseaside

Taking shelter from the early afternoon sun. Over half the downland sheep I saw yesterday had burrowed their way into thickets, or arranged themselves under trees to escape the heat. Concerningly their fleeces look winter-weight, and one old ewe could barely see through her curls. I hope they are shorn soon, poor loves 🐑 🐏 🐑 🐏 by @angelaseaside

Both sides of the Common Blue butterfly. They seem to be thriving up on the Downs in spite of the heatwave. 🦋🦋#commonbluebutterfly #yarrow #heatwave #julysunshine #chalkdownland by @angelaseaside

I started out for the hills but plunged into the woods instead... just TOO HOT. A lovely strip of woodland curls itself round the feet and ankles of Warren Hill, and following the narrow shaded path was 'just right.' 🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳 (the plant in the last photo is a slightly crazy wild carrot!)#seektheshade #inthewoods #heatwave #thankgodfortrees #hiddenpaths by @angelaseaside

Why is it that even a tiny glimpse of the sea, (or perhaps any large body of water) is such a heart-lifting moment? Is it the space - the arc of the uncluttered sky - the light and the movement? Is it that we are about to arrive on the edge of all we know? Is it because eons ago we were part of that sea life, rising and falling with the tide, at one with the element of water and all that lived in it? Is that why we feel a yearning tinged with sadness because it's a place we can't return to - except to swim, dive or float?#beachhuts #lancingbeach #bythesea #longlosthome #justthinking by @angelaseaside

Growing above the tideline alongside the coastal path at Seaford, and apparently rare: - "Frankenia laevis, commonly sea heath, a low shrub in the family Frankeniaceae. It is native to south-west Europe and Britain and to northwestern Africa, including Macaronesia. It grows on the coast. It is rare in Britain."
