From today’s journal:

“This desire to create great art, it is heart stopping. It will stop your heart right in its tracks before it has a chance to finish its whispered sentence. Too bad, but we aren’t given even one lifetime to figure this out. We have a mere window within a lifetime. I see a hand at the shutters, closing slowly, and my pen scribbles on in great haste. “More to say! More to sing! More to try! More to explore! I’m not great yet, but I’m growing! I’m trying! WAIT!” There is no waiting. Cut it open. Let it bleed out. Ship it. Do it again. There is no point in fiddling for greatness. Just make.”

I took Mark Smythe’s UCLA film scoring class after knowing him casually for a few years. Impressed by his musical intuition and complete lack of filter, I asked if he’d consider being a mentor, and went on to study film scoring privately with him throughout 2023 & 2024. He encouraged and advocated for me in countless ways - writing letters of recommendation & introduction emails, connecting me with various meetups, resources, and community hubs. When I told him work had become too slow to continue private lessons, he immediately put me forward to teach classes at LACM. I’m so grateful for each of these things individually. Looking back on it as a whole, it’s overwhelming. He was really good at being a friend.

Mark, you were a funny, eccentric, mischievous, cantankerous, generous member of the composer family. I will miss your rants and fun facts and ingenious suggestions. Thank you for all your guidance and encouragement. You really went beyond. This loss leaves us all dangling on an unresolved chord. We’re devastated and dumbfounded to lose you. by @angelasheik

I had a dream about you. You’d given me the weirdest, most indescribable gift and I spent the whole dream exploring it. It was beautiful and surprising and strange; part art piece, part game, part learning tool, part toy. It had secret compartments and brilliant puzzles. It grew and changed as I interacted with it. I woke up realizing the gift was you - you daring to share your whole, unfiltered, unusual, delightful, evolving self with me - and I am so grateful to have you in my life. by @angelasheik

She begs for poison. Daily
Chocolate. Raisins.
Tasty
Small bites that would mess her up good.
Lucky for her I resist
those pleading eyes, knowing how much it matters
But it does make me wonder
how often I ask
For things that would do great harm
Please? Please? And now? Can I? Please?!
Just this one time, could I taste this sweet thing?
And if I knew better how grateful I’d be
That Love answers “no, trust me.” by @angelasheik
