Yellow Peril (2019)

Happy #aapiheritagemonth 🎈

I made this sculpture during my freshman year of college. We were riding off the high of a Crazy Rich Asians summer, but I had just taken my first ethnic studies class and found myself frustrated at what felt like a reductive conversation about AAPI representation in media.

I created Yellow Peril to elevate the first snapshots of Asian representation in American history. These images were relevant during the 20th century, remained relevant when the pandemic hit just a few months later, and they feel even more relevant today.

When I look at our national discourse on the race against china, the displacement of cultural neighborhoods, and the geopolitics of deportation on stolen, imperial land, I have to admit, celebrating AAPI heritage month tastes a little bittersweet.

This also happens to be the first face I ever made! Shoutout to @pancho_jimenezz for teaching me how to wrap slabs around a ball of newspaper. Photos by me at @safariiicamp, drip by @sagoxstudio.

Today is my last day at @thepottersstudio! It’s bittersweet.

This was the studio where I first heard my quiet creative whisper turn into a loud artistic voice. I have to share credit with all the lovely ladies who sat with me for those late night conversations around the handbuilding table. I’ll always be grateful.

Here are some of the many highlights from my time there :)

Everyone thought I was insane for wanting to soda fire my monk. Good thing the TPS team is just as insane as I am.

Cleaning toilets every Wednesday strangely became a highlight of my week.

My favorite part was being able to arrange the dishes in the kitchen every night.

Sometimes I’d run across pieces like this soda fired beauty.

My monk, bisqued! Apologies to whoever was responsible for loading him into the kiln 😭

My knees got strong lifting and settling him in every night.

Lots of scary moments.

I started my hand phase when we first moved into the new location! I’d spent the summer missing clay while the new spot was under construction. I kept saying that my hands felt “itchy.”

I was mesmerized my Gail’s hands from the first moment I met her.

My first time vending at the holiday market back in 2025!

My first time firing a kiln all on my own back in 2024.

I became a pro at it by the end.

That time my sister came to visit.

That time I did a handbuilding competition.

My little shelf! I was one of the first to move into the new place.

I made her because I was tired.

I made her because I was heartbroken. This was the first piece I made when I joined the studio in 2024. I’m grateful I had a place where I could tend to my little heart in those months.

Queen of manifestation type shii!!

At the beginning of this year (before I had ever even heard of @safariiicamp), I had this prophetic vision: to create an experience where I could share the stories and faces that I could see in the clay with other people. Something that would combine my history buff nerdiness, messy clay sculptiness, and kooky art teacher-iness.

Head in a Jar (2024)

Yearn, but don’t get so close. Keep it sweet by maintaining the distance. Sometimes it’s more romantic to daydream about the memories than it is to relive them.

Quick to offense because you’re always on the defense. A smart mouth loaded with ammunition. Drawing conclusions out of thin air because the conflict makes you feel a little more alive.

Just Resting My Eyes (2024)

For all the times I’ve fallen asleep on the train and missed my stop, been caught napping at my desk in the middle of the workday, or refused to go to the hotel room after a red-eye because I couldn’t stand the thought of wasting a day. Life is so busy and beautiful and begging—it’s impossible to make time for a proper rest. In my dreams, I’m busy, too.
