For those who know me well and those who don’t, I didn’t speak much about my dad. But for up until the age of 6, he was my favourite person in the world.

He got tuberculosis when I was 5 and it was irreversible. My mom made the hard decision to leave China for my future and my dad made the harder decision to allow to let me go. Despite his illness that got increasingly worse, he continued to love and live life to the fullest. He grew a ceroid cacti that blooms only once a year and only at night. Every year, he would show me the videos of it blooming. Growing up in our place in China, I would draw all over our apartment walls and to this day, they remain on them, as ugly as the day I first drew them. Sometimes, he would send me photos of it to me because he was proud. He learned to play the trumpet 2 years ago despite his illness and started to learn the piano when it became too difficult for him to play the trumpet. Even though he struggled to walk uphill for more than 5 minutes, he would climb 6 flights of stairs to get home everyday. Going on hikes was incredibly difficult but it never stopped him from accompanying me. When I stayed with him during my visit in 2019, he would go out to get fruit for me in the morning and carry it up 6 flights of stairs and cut them up for me all before I ever woke up. He sent me videos whenever he got a coconut because he knew I loved them. He was strong-willed and always positive. He loved me more than anything despite behind hundreds of thousands of miles away. He never let me know how bad his illness was because he didn’t want me to worry. Even in his last few months, he told me he was getting stronger everyday and when I told him I was going to come back to see him March 2024 he said would be here.

The last time I saw him was July 3, 2019 after he dropped me off at the airport hotel room because he didn’t want me to wake up at 4am to catch my flight. He passed away unexpectedly on July 3, 2023. He was a great man and a kind man. He was the best dad. I am so lucky to have had the time I had with him, despite how short it was.
