Day 5 in Armenia🇦🇲. Exploring Syunik Province + Khor Virap⛪️

Khor Virap Monastery ⛪️
Not in Syunik Province, but on the way and absolutely worth a stop. It’s famous for its breathtaking view of Mount Ararat 🏔️ and its role in the beginning of Christianity in Armenia.

St. Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned here for 13 years before helping Armenia become the first country to adopt Christianity as a state religion in 301 AD.

The Road to Syunik 🚗🏔️

A long drive ahead, but the views along the way made every kilometre worth it. ⛰️

Tatev Monastery ⛪️
Another spectacular monastery, with the easiest way to get there being by cable car 🚡 . The road is quite challenging, with sharp turns and steep sections, so the Wings of Tatev is definitely worth taking.

It also holds the Guinness World Record for the world’s longest reversible aerial tramway, stretching about 5.75 km.

Shaki Waterfall 💦
Our last stop of the day was an impressive 18-metre waterfall.

• Charents’ Arch
A scenic viewpoint with a famous view of Mount Ararat, built in 1957 in honour of Armenian poet Yeghishe Charents, who wrote beautifully about Ararat and Armenia.

Unfortunately, Ararat decided to take the day off. 😂

• Garni Temple 🏛️
A 1st-century pagan temple and the only surviving Greco-Roman colonnaded building in Armenia.

A spectacular natural formation of basalt columns, which resembles the pipes of a giant organ, a musical instrument, hence the name.

• Armenian Lavash & Gata 🫓
On our way to the next stop, we noticed a place where they make fresh lavash and Armenian gata right on the spot.

They also offer masterclasses for only 1,000 AMD, which would be a great experience if you’d like to try making them yourself.

We skipped the masterclass but couldn’t resist the warm, freshly baked lavash and gata and they were so good! 🤤

• Geghard Monastery ⛪️
A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Armenia’s most incredible monasteries. What makes Geghard truly special is that several of its churches and tombs are carved directly into the mountain rock. 🤯

💡 DON’T miss these two things:

🪨 Make a wish: Just before entering the monastery, look to the left for the small openings in the stone wall. According to local tradition, if you make a wish and successfully throw a small stone into one of them, your wish will come true. ✨

💧 Try the holy spring: Inside the rock-cut part of the monastery, you’ll find a spring and its water is traditionally believed to have healing properties. Some visitors use it on areas of the body where they have pain or discomfort.

• First stop: car rental
If you’re planning to explore Armenia beyond Yerevan, renting a car is the most convenient option, especially for reaching places that aren’t easily accessible by public transport.

We needed a 7-seater, and rented ours from @swift.rent . It worked perfectly for our group.

• Zvartnots Cathedral ⛪️
A spectacular 7th-century cathedral, now standing in ruins after collapsing centuries ago.

• Etchmiadzin Cathedral
The oldest cathedral in the world, originally built around 301-303 AD. It’s the spiritual center of the Armenian Apostolic Church.

The museum tells the story of the Armenian Genocide through photographs, documents and historical records.

💡 If you visit, I highly recommend taking a guided tour. There’s a lot of history to understand, and having a guide makes the experience much more meaningful.

Perfect spot for souvenir hunting in Yerevan. 🇦🇲🛍️

You’ll find everything from traditional Armenian crafts and handmade pieces to paintings, jewelry and little gifts to take home.

• Dinner at Kavkazskaya Plennitsa
The whole restaurant is designed in the style of the famous Kidnapping, Caucasian Style movie, and the live show is inspired by it too. 🎭

The food was good, the atmosphere was fun, and the prices were reasonable.

💡There are 2 locations, we went to the one at 4/6 Pap Tagavor Street.

-You DON’T have to climb all 572 stairs! 😅 There are escalators running through the inside of the Cascade🪜
-Take your time to enjoy the sculptures both inside and outside. There’s also an art museum inside 👩🏻‍🎨
-The cherry on the top is the panoramic view over Yerevan, with Mount Ararat in the distance on a clear day 🏔️

The Aram Street location has a hidden inner courtyard, making it a great spot to escape the summer heat while enjoying your brunch 🌮🍹

• Northern Avenue 🌆
One of Yerevan’s most lively pedestrian streets, perfect for an evening stroll when the city comes alive.

• FEIN Coffee ☕️
Come at the top of the hour! That’s when the music kicks in and the coffee beans start flying through the tubes around the café. 🎶✨
