In Ani Cuenca’s practice, material is not a support but an active agent in the production of meaning. Drawing from her architectural background, she constructs systems where structure, rhythm, repetition, and balance are constantly tested through friction. Sandpaper, wax, pumice stone, metals, textiles, and objects marked by use form a material vocabulary in which wear becomes a generative force rather than a sign of deterioration.

Her works investigate the fragile conditions that allow something to remain standing. In pieces such as Axis of Permanence and Inventory of Frictions, stability emerges not through solidity, but through negotiation between weight, gravity, adhesion, tension, and time. The industrial and the malleable coexist in precarious configurations where materials absorb traces, register contact, and accumulate histories.

Moving between sculpture and spatial installation, Cuenca transforms architectural principles into unstable fields of relation. Her practice ultimately asks what it means for matter to persist: not as an assertion of permanence, but as a continuous negotiation with friction, transformation, and decay.

Ani Cuenca develops a sculptural and installation-based practice in which architecture, matter, and tension converge through precarious structures of balance. Her research begins with ordinary, materially worn elements—sandpaper, wax, brass, textiles, and found objects—which she displaces from their original functions to investigate relationships between erosion, permanence, and resistance.

With an increasingly established exhibition trajectory, Cuenca has participated in group exhibitions, art salons, festivals, and biennials in Brazil and internationally. Her exhibition record includes @fibra_bienal FIBRA – Bienal de Arte Têxtil, @coletivo.correntedear V Corrente de Ar in Lisbon, @affordableartfairnyc the 39th Chelsea International Fine Art Competition at Agora Gallery in New York, as well as contemporary art salons and curated projects across São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Piracicaba, and Santo André. In 2026, her practice extends into the independent art-fair circuit through @radar_arte Radar – Feira de Arte Independente, further consolidating a trajectory marked by an expanding presence across diverse platforms for the exhibition and circulation of contemporary art.
