Little art diary from the Netherlands

I’ve always been someone who notices small things. The colors on fruits at a market, flowers beginning to dry at the edges, the way evening light changes a room for a few minutes before disappearing again.

A lot of my work comes from that quiet attention.

Painting, for me, isn’t really about perfection. It’s about holding onto a feeling, a memory, or a fleeting moment long enough to understand it.

Currently building a life around art, curiosity, and all the little things that still make me stop and want to paint them.

A lot of painting for me happens before I ever touch the canvas. Hours with color combinations that don’t work. Palettes I abandon. Sketches I start again.

It’s not inefficiency, it’s part of the process. Working slowly forces me to be more present with every detail. After hours with textures and tiny details, the work stops feeling like work and becomes a quiet place to return to.

And somewhere along the way, the piece slowly starts to come together.

I bought this puzzle more than a year ago while traveling. At the time, it felt like a nice little thing to bring home with me. Then I did what most of us do with good intentions: I put it in a cupboard and forgot it existed.

Fast forward to now: after shifting continents and landing in the Netherlands, everything around me suddenly felt new, unsteady and a little uncertain. So I decided to finally bring the puzzle back into my life because apparently what one needs when adjusting to a new country is voluntarily adding another layer of chaos.

At first, I questioned my judgment, my eyesight, even the lighting in my living room. But I stuck with it, partly because I wanted to prove I could, mostly because it was taking up way too much space in my living room to ignore. To my own surprise, I finished it in a week.

Now that the puzzle is done (my table and living room have been liberated), I’m going back to painting full-time. If you’d like a commissioned piece, let me know—I’d love to make something for you. 😬 by @aniegeorge
