The Honey Bees have been busy in the yard! Native Aster flowers provide a critical source of late-season nectar and pollen during the early fall season when most other flowers have faded. 🐝 by @animals_by_danimal

Late summer to Harvest season. Just a glimpse of some of my days spent outside, watching the seasons change. Kansas has treated me well🌾💚🌝 by @animals_by_danimal

Happy fall migration to these hummingbirds ❤️ “Hummingbirds drink nectar and sugar water for energy. When you’re feeding them pure sugar water, there’s no need to put in additives. These birds forage at other sources besides feeders, getting plenty of nutrition from eating small insects like flies and gnats. They even eat small spiders. And hummingbirds are so resourceful that they often forage for insects in the sap wells drilled in trees by sapsuckers.” by @animals_by_danimal

During our latest hike in @rockynps I overheard some rummaging around a pile of rocks while hiking up the mountain on Glacier Gorge Trailhead towards The Loch. It was a Pika!! We all stood still and it managed to cross the path while foraging and literally ran over my foot. It pays off to always check the environments around you and to keep your eyes peeled, you never know what you’ll find on your hike!

“The American Pika is a diurnal species of mammal, active during the day. Unlike their burrow-building neighbor the marmot, pikas don’t hibernate, and so they require more energy than other alpine animals. When “haying” (gathering food for winter), the American Pika makes an average of 13 trips per hour to collect food—over 100 trips a day.

Pikas are not rodents, but rather the tiniest member of the lagomorph family, which includes rabbits.

American Pikas are among North America’s toughest animals: they are one of the few mammals in the lower 48 states that can survive their entire lives in the windswept alpine terrain above treeline.”

I found an alien in my backyard!🐛🛸🌱🪐🌳This is the American Dagger Moth. During the caterpillar stage, they feed on the leaves of hardwood trees like oak, maple, elm, ash, birch, and willow. by @animals_by_danimal

Found a special friend in the garden today munching on my climbing milkweed ✨🐛 #monarchcaterpillar #monarchbutterfly #climbingmilkweed by @animals_by_danimal

The ultimate stamp of approval from local wildlife! Chickadees are highly selective cavity nesters and excellent biological indicators of a healthy local food web. Watching this pair choose our yard (in our antique well water pump) this spring was the ultimate validation for the native plants I’ve been adding. Knowing our habitat successfully generated the thousands of insects needed to raise these healthy nestlings completely made my season. 🥹🪹🤍 Plant natives and you won’t regret it! (You can hear the alarmed chickadee parent in the background noise when I took a quick little peek) #chickadee #nativeplants #plantnative by @animals_by_danimal

Kansas rocks! One of my favorite volunteer activities with the extension Master Naturalist program is when we have our junior summer camp. Today we educated these kids on all types of rocks and fossils that you can find in Kansas. We searched for fossils ourselves in the limestone rock nearby and discovered some interesting things🔎🛘🐚🌾! @jocoextension by @animals_by_danimal

There’s just something I love about a wispy and flowy feather grass 💚 by @animals_by_danimal

“Swans tend to live in lowland, freshwater wetlands. You can find them in shallow lakes, ponds, lagoons, marshes, reed beds, and slow-flowing rivers. You can also find them on artificial bodies of water, like reservoirs, gravel pits, ornamental lakes, and canals. Some swans venture into brackish and saltwater habitats too” @sedgwickcountyzoo by @animals_by_danimal

The Coscoroba swan is the world’s smallest swan species, found in South America, and is unique for having a hybrid-like mix of swan, goose, and duck characteristics! 🦢🤍 @sedgwickcountyzoo by @animals_by_danimal
