Earlier today we said goodbye to my nana. She was born in 1929 in Georgetown, Guyana down the road from a power plant. She was the only one of her siblings to live past childhood, and the only one to be raised by her grandmother. In the 50s she moved to Toronto on her own through the West Indian Domestic Scheme, she would later raise my dad as a single mom and bring her own mother to Canada to become her caretaker. She was the strongest, funniest, and smartest person I have ever met. In the last decade we became even closer as she opened up to me a lot more about her childhood in Guyana and early life in Canada and I will remember her stories and miss her forever 🤍🕊️
