HELD UNTIL MELT

1 TOOL + 1 MATERIAL = 1 STOOL

A candle is a vessel of time, an object that doesn’t just
exist, but expires. As it burns, it marks duration,
presence, and loss. It glows with calmness, it scents the
air, it flickers like a living organism. For me, this quality
of the candle, its visible aging, embodies the essence of
temporality. We trust it, we find peace in it, even though
it carries fire at its core. It’s gentle, yet dangerous;
intimate, yet uncontrollable.
The same paradox defines my use of the heat gun. A
tool of control and danger, normally used to bend
acrylics or shrink plastics, becomes here a symbol of
transformation, an extension of touch. I wanted to
explore how we perceive comfort and risk, and how
design can provoke both at once.
Building a stool from candles challenges our
expectations of furniture: it’s familiar yet unstable,
warm yet tense.The “ Held until Melt“ invites the sitter
into a subtle psychological tension. You wonder about
your weight, your warmth, your presence. Every move-
ment becomes part of its life span. It transforms sitting
,an act of rest,into an act of awareness. You don’t
just sit on it; you sit with it, in dialogue with time itself.
As a designer, I see this project as a conversation
between perception and material truth. It redefines
material honesty; transforming wax, heat, and time into
design language. It challenges the expectation that
furniture must only serve. Instead, it reveals
emotion, temporality, and narrative through material
experience. Wax becomes language. Heat becomes tool
and concept. And the stool becomes a living metaphor
for the paradoxes of our comfort -fragile, fleeting, yet
deeply human. A stool that might melt, a seat that asks
you to think about what it means to sit, to stay, to burn.

1 Tool 1 Stool investigates what happens when design is reduced to an absolute minimum of means: one single tool and one single material to create a functional seat. Drawing from the tradition of Oulipian constraints and experimental practice, the works on display reject external fasteners and secondary processes. Instead, each piece is born entirely from the direct, physical dialogue between an implement and its matter - revealing how strict limitation can dismantle creative assumptions and unlock unexpected material languages.

What if a bag was never truly finished?

Piece of Leather explores a different relationship between people and the objects they own. Beginning as a single piece of leather, the carrying system continues to take shape through its owner — adapting to what they carry, how they wear it and how their life changes over time.

Rather than prescribing one fixed form, its open-ended construction invites experimentation. Straps can be repositioned, interiors rearranged and the leather folded into different configurations, allowing each piece to develop its own character through use.

As the leather ages, folds, marks and traces become part of the design — creating a physical record of routines, experiences and changing identities.

Through material, interaction and time, Piece of Leather explores emotional durability as an alternative approach to luxury: designing objects that become more personal, rather than obsolete, with age.

Die Bachelorarbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Entwicklung und Umsetzung der Luxusmodemarke AY die eine neue Ära des nachhaltigen Luxus einleitet. AY kombiniert hochwertiges Design, soziale Verantwortung und innovative Technologie zu einem einzigartigen Markenerlebnis. AY steht für Luxus, der nicht nur einen monetären, sondern auch einen ethischen Wert hat.

AY (auf türkisch „Mond“), ein symbol für Wandel, Beständigkeit und Inspiration.

Das Bachelor Kolloquium findet am 27.03.2025 ab 16:30 Uhr in der Aula der Fachhochschule Dortmund im Fachbereich Design statt.
