I can’t tell you how perfect and beautiful and devastatingly hard this year’s burn was. The idea was great: I returned with aplomb and brought 10 of my closest Canadian friends to my camp with me, bringing together my two families — and it was beautiful.

Last year, newly inducted into the cult (lol), the weather was perfect, the ride was easy, and I flowed with no real road bumps.

This year, from start to finish, I hit snags. From the flight to the burn (hit with a strike, a hurricane and delays, spent my birthday in transit and sleeping in a hooker hotel in Oakland for 3 hours), to a crazy apocalyptic build (so soul bonding - love my @papercranesburningman fam) to encounters with past and new selves, ghosts showing up from my past and more; all of this amounted into one certainty: that there is no certainty and all I can do is flow.

When you let go, a funny thing happens: you make space for beauty and chance. I walked away with a sense of self that I had been waiting a long time for. by @anitachauhan

✨It’s my birthday✨, so naturally, I’m feeling reflective (and maybe just a little bit philosophical). This past year has been a wild ride—business highs, building strong, beautiful connections with people, new and old, tons (!!) of personal growth, hitting crazy physical milestones and a few fun negative-narrative-eradicating epiphanies along the way.

Change is a gift and I really, really am grateful for it.
Thank you for all being a part of my journey, the highs and the lows. I’m made whole and feel more connected because of the people in my life.

Looking back, I’m amazed at how much I’ve grown. My life feels like it’s on a completely different path than before. As I step into this next year, I’m excited to see where it leads.

In just a few days, I’ll be heading to Burning Man—wish me luck! taken in Toronto, Ontario by @anitachauhan

January felt like it was the longest month, but I'm not mad about it.

- rocked a whole30 cleanse
- went back to being brunette (said bye to blonde 🥲 - for NOW)
- squatted 135lbs (!!) by @anitachauhan

The procession

In Rome, at the Basilica dei Santi XII Apostoli in May, I followed a bunch of nuns as they spent the day studying and exploring this gorgeous church.

I'm not a religious person (at all, I'm somewhere in between spiritual and agnostic), but there was something so serene, so intriguing about watching them flow through the space with such reverence and placidity.

In university I took a religious studies course - it was unique in that it was a film course that looked at popular films in a bid to answer the question, "what does it mean to be religious?" Amongst the films we watched were The Wrestler, The Descent, and more. I walked away with the thought that religiosity needn't be just an adherence to a faith or a creed; rather, it is the ritual, the inbetweens, the daily moments that give us a glimpse at something higher, bigger than us.

These nuns have devoted their lives to something that I don't fully understand, but we all need something to connect to and flow with.

Have you ever looked at your life and wondered to yourself, how did I get here? In the best way, ofc. Like, how did I get here, with all these amazing, supportive people, a life full of joy, connection and beauty?

That I, a mere 3 years ago, could never fathom that I would be here, working towards living between Toronto and Paris, working for myself, grow an astrology business, building a cool dream project, working for myself and being so loved and cared for by those around me -- able to do a handstand (??!!??! See last vid) and become a pilates teacher?? Every earlier version of me would be shook. Above all, it seems that I am so much more happier and secure in myself, my body and my place in the world.

But, I guess that is what life is about, right? To know the good is to know the bad. To suffer is to recognize when there is something beautiful in front of you and to embrace and hold joy in the ways you need. Also, designing the life you want is tough - I'm not going to deny that. But when you get clear on what you want, who you want to be and trust your gut, good things come your way. ✨

Thanks so much to February, it wasn't so cold this year. taken in Paris, France by @anitachauhan

Shani came to @akadanieljohn in 2015, rescued, small and scared. We think she was ~5 years old at the time and had several different owners. Dan promised to be her forever home, and we made sure to love her every single day.

Today, after a long and tough conversation, and sadly, lots of suffering, we let Shani go.

Shani was my first pet, and before her I disliked cats greatly. She showed me such affection and love — such a sweet being. I marvelled at her presence every single day. Shani loved naps, popcorn, hummus, face rubs, sitting too close to the fireplace, roast chicken, and bullying me out of my seat on the couch. She hated the streetsweeper (we called it the monster) and would shepherd us to bed if it got too late. She layed with me when I had migraines and would purr. And when Dan was hit by a car earlier this year, she didn’t leave his side for a week, laying on top of him and playing nurse.

10+ years together and I still feel like it wasn’t enough. I’m going to miss her deeply, but will honour her every single day. taken in Toronto Ontario Canada by @anitachauhan
