Killarney, popularly called Stollmeyer's Castle, was the first great house to be constructed in Port-of-Spain.

Its history is a rich tapestry of private ownership, military occupation, and government preservation.

Constructed on lands which had previously been used as a government stock farm for cocoa, it was the first of the mansions established along Queen's Park West known as “The Magnificent Seven”.

It was built between 1902 and 1904 by cocoa entrepreneur Charles Fourier Stollmeyer as a family home. But his wife found it too ornate for her tastes, so Stollmeyer gave it to their son, Charles Conrad, who was about to marry.

The new Mrs. Stollmeyer gave the building the name Killarney, after the place in Ireland where she had hoped to spend her honeymoon.

Designed by Scotsman Robert Gillies, who was inspired by Scotland's Balmoral Castle, the architect and contractor of the elaborate structure was another Scotsman, Robert Gillies.

During World War Two, Killarney, like its neighbour Whitehall, was commandeered by United States Forces and was popularly referred to as “The Castle”.

It is from that period that Killarney became better known as Stollmeyer’s Castle.

After the war, the Stollmeyer family remained in the house until their deaths in the 1960s.

The property remained in the family until 1972, and in 1979, the Government of Trinidad and Tobago acquired it.

The building has served various governmental purposes over the years.

After extensive restoration and rehabilitation completed in May 2018, it has since functioned as an arts and cultural center.

Killarney, at Lot 31 Maraval Road, St. Clair, is now a listed heritage site under the National Trust Act, and is a recognised tourist attraction and cultural landmark.
