Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya a pediatrician and neonatologist, was arrested on December 27, 2024, when Israeli forces raided the Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, where he served as director. He refused to leave his patients, even though his son Ibrahim had been killed by an Israeli strike at the hospital. Since then he has been detained indefinitely without a formal trial. He was transferred to maximum-security facilities (including Nafa and Nitzan prisons), and was placed in prolonged solitary confinement. Following legal visits in early July 2026, his legal team and human rights groups reported he is in critical, life-threatening condition. His lawyer documented significant weight loss and severe signs of physical trauma. He could face imminent death in Israeli custody. This is what Dr. Safiya said to his lawyers on July 2, 2026 “They brought me here to kill me. I don’t see myself surviving. This is the end.” Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya’s life is at imminent risk in detention. Take action now: go to the Amnesty International website and sign the urgent petition to demand his release. Every voice matters.

Sharing some videos and photos of our beloved Maccy who left us last Monday. I’m still in a state of disbelief as I realize I’ll never see him again! Even now, I can hear his collar jingling and the sound of his paws on our wood floors. He was the sweetest, most fun loving and energetic dog I’ve known; he was Mirai’s faithful companion for 14 years and I felt so fortunate to be his mama!
He got me through Mirais departure for college and then the poor guy had to put up with all my undivided attention! A while ago, Mirai put it very succinctly when she explained to Vivek the order of importance in our family: “It’s Maccy first, then me and then you!”
He followed me wherever I went and though he was almost blind at the end, he still had so much energy and excitement over treats and walks.
Even some of our friends who don’t like small dogs were amazed by his lightning fast speed when he ran and his deep growling bark!!! The videos of his crazy sprinting were taken when he was 14 years old!
RIP darling Maccy❤️ by @anjalis.art

“The notion of the ‘Black male predator’ is so historically rooted in the American consciousness that we have come to accept the brutalization and murder of citizens by the police as an acceptable method of law enforcement. The assumption is that Black men are the bad guys, the police are the good guys, and if the police killed someone it must have been for a good reason. They must have done something.” Jill Nelson, Police Brutality: An Anthology.
This was heartbreaking to paint, as I read the stories of each person. The names in red are the high profile cases we all know about. The names in white are just a FEW of the black men (and women) killed by the police in 2014 and 2015.

I became an American citizen today. The Oath Ceremony was an amazingly moving experience. Sobering too, as I thought of how fortunate I am, while so many people who are desperate to migrate to the U.S. cannot come here. Every USCIS official who spoke made us feel so welcomed and appreciated for taking this momentous step! There were 1350 people from 93 countries😊. The great grand daughter of immigrant Joseph Pulitzer, who established the Pulitzer Prize, gave the keynote speech. It was beautiful. And having just visited a Navajo reservation last month, I want to express my gratitude to the Native Americans who were the first stewards of this land for thousands of years🙏🏾 The best part of being a citizen is that now I can vote! by @anjalis.art

I painted this for my daughter Mirai, who found the quote when we were both feeling disheartened about the state of the world. She also marched for immigrants’ rights yesterday in San Francisco, following in the footsteps of her activist Grandma Jean!! ❤️❤️ by @anjalis.art
