Hidden inside Agra’s historic Roman Catholic Cemetery stands John William Hessing’s Tomb, popularly known as the “Red Taj Mahal.” Built in red sandstone, its grand dome, arched façades, chhatris and symmetrical Mughal-inspired design instantly remind you of the iconic Taj Mahal.
But here’s the beautiful part—this monument has its own love story. John William Hessing, a Dutch-born military officer who served in the Maratha army, died in Agra in 1803. His wife, Anne, commissioned this magnificent tomb in his memory—just as the Taj Mahal was built as a monument of love.
It may be smaller than the Taj, but the craftsmanship, history and emotion behind it make this one of Agra’s most fascinating hidden gems.

🏰 Who Really Lived in Agra Fort?

Most people think Agra Fort belonged only to Shah Jahan... but that’s only part of the story.

Agra Fort was transformed into a magnificent red sandstone fortress by Emperor Akbar in 1565. Later, it became the royal residence of three great Mughal emperors:
👑 Akbar
👑 Jahangir
👑 Shah Jahan

Ironically, Shah Jahan, who built the Taj Mahal, spent the last years of his life imprisoned inside Agra Fort by his son Aurangzeb. From the Musamman Burj, he is believed to have gazed at the Taj Mahal until his final days.

📍 Agra Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of India’s most fascinating historical monuments.
