Phil, your enthusiasm gave me the courage to take a giant leap into a hobby I dreamed of as a kid. You always picked up, answered, guided and reminded me about just how much fun there is to be had carving it up on the coast. By sheer coincidence or divine will, I ended up with the “sister” Spyder to your esteemed chariot.

You became the first in a line of new motor-head friendships that have given me so much more faith in humanity. Life has become more beautiful because of you.

An evening walk, holding hands.

Over the past week, a kid from my hometown in the heartland of America came to the west coast to race against the nation’s fastest swimmers, overcoming numerous obstacles to finish top-10 in both his events. I’m incredibly emotional about this because I remember what it was like as a pudgy little dweeb to witness gladiators competing, utterly awestruck while I sat in the stands, wondering if I was crazy for wanting to take a shot at being in the arena myself someday.
