👋🏻 Lately I’ve been learning and researching about pediatric feeding disorders🤓

I was fascinated to find that more than 1 in 37 children under the age of 5 are affected in the United States each year. For each child, every single bite can be painful, scary, or impossible. This can impede on their nutrition, development, growth and overall well being.

Looking forward to applying the research and bringing it to the kiddos out there who require assistance and treatment! Can’t wait to meet you all🤗

Token economies can aide children in visualising progress, accepting and working for reinforcement which is delayed, to learn to self monitor and to learn to regulate behavior. To implement a token economy, identify and define a targeted behavior to be changed. Next, consider the items or activities which motivate the child 🧸🚗 🏀🎨

What is a token economy?
Token economies utilise the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis in order to target behavior change. It is a contingency management system in which positive reinforcement is used and children can earn tokens as they engage in a targeted behavior. The tokens can be established as conditioned reinforcers to effectively exchange an object or symbol for goods or services. Research has found the token economy system to be effective in reducing off task behaviors in demand settings and to increase individual skills and attending (Fiske et al., 2015).

Danke schön to all the Swiss psychiatrists, psychologists and therapists whom I had the privilege to learn from the past few weeks. I had a superb time learning about C.G. Jung; the founding father of analytic psychology and recognised as one of the most influential psychiatrists of all time. The past few weeks were filled with engaging discussions on Jung’s influence on applied analytic psychology and specifically how the Swiss have successfully applied treatment over the years.

Sensory play with children can be utilised to express their inner world through their body’s vestibular and proprioception senses. Activities which involve the body’s ability to take in sensory input, process it and provide appropriate responses will enhance learning!

Four functions of behaviour:
Because it feels good (sensory stimulation)
Any movement or action that pleases one’s own senses. It may feel good such as scratching an itch. Some signs to look for:
-       Happens across lots of different situations
-       Happens even when the child is alone

Four functions of behaviour:
Access to attention
Any behaviour that results in the child interacting with the other person. It may look like walking towards a person, talking to the person and even looking at the person.

Four functions of behaviour:
To get something (access to tangibles)
Children may engage in challenging behaviour in order to get access to an item or activity. It may be anything they want, like a favourite toy or snack.

Challenging behaviour often occurs because the child is unable to communicate their wants and needs for attention, medical care, preference for items/activities, dislike for people or activities, need for assistance or how sensory stimuli are affecting them. Behaviours that are repeated will have a function.

Identifying the function of a behaviour means investigating why that behaviour is occurring.

There are 4 main functions of behaviour, or reasons why behaviour might be occurring. They are:
- To get something (access to tangibles)
- To avoid something (escape)
- To get attention
- Because it feels good (sensory/automatic)
