Anxiety art journal

Sometimes my mind will spiral and I come undone. A practice I was given decades ago was write out all the anxious thoughts and feelings then let that shit go. So here’s my anxiety jar. Today’s working session was mostly me overthinking an upcoming medical thing and my brain needing an off switch. by @anna.devlin.art

This work consist of nail polish, ink, acrylic paint, markers, watercolors, kids crayons and gelatos. I think so often as artist we get hung up on materials. Sometimes it can be as simple as raising your kids craft supplies and flowing. Here’s my fun fall work: an hour pushed into 50 or so seconds. by @anna.devlin.art

Hand pattern work is harder than expected. Posting these so in a few months I can see the growth. Thinking of switching to strictly paper work for a season. So here’s the mixing bowl. Art meets domestic labor. by @anna.devlin.art

Remember to play. It’s not that serious. Some days I create works and some days I journal. Sometimes it’s just regulating my nervous system. My personal emotional support husband is away and a habit I started two decades ago is whenever I miss someone or think deeply on them or pray for them sometimes I need the grounding of creating. So here’s my silly sketch journal with a messy love creation. by @anna.devlin.art

Using all my elements of creating. I finally leaped into entire page work where instead of manipulating the one image I layer pages and pages of work. It might not look like much but the process of this one is where the magical mundane work can be found by @anna.devlin.art

HER NAME WILL BE FEARLESS
And in all the stories my daughter shall hear, it will not be princes that slay the dragons, but little girls that believe in magic with big, brave hearts and even bigger dreams.
She will learn to rely on her own sword in every battle, in every struggle, in every war because she will learn how to devour every single monster from their very core.

Tw: sexual assault

I think you can’t have good art without honesty and vulnerability. And while I feel I owe these squares very little other than showing up as myself, the feed this morning has me processing something very real and hard from my past.

Roughly twenty years ago I added a title to my soul. Survivor. Two decades later as the news bombards my nervous system, I time travel. I take a journey back to 18 year old me. I think about the brokenness of that girl and I want to wrap her in my arms and tell her it wasn’t her fault. Her mini skirt didn’t cause him to drug her drink. Her choice of sprite instead of booze that night didn’t change her fate. Her smile and laugh and overall joy didn’t give him the permission to harm her. I hold that 18 year old girl in my heart. And as each year passes, my heart has changed and grown.

Trauma has two very obvious paths it can conform you into a fearful person or transform you into a survivor. Mine, with lots of therapy and work, transformed me into a survivor. It’s now just a part of my story and not the entire story. So as I hold my 18 year old self, I also hold all the survivors hearts within my own.

If I made a work of the women hearts who have survived the violence my art would wrap around my country and the world. There would be almost nothing else but hearts.

I think about her, the Cornell Jane doe and I am in awe of her strength to continue. To fight. I want her to know that she isn’t holding this alone. Millions will hold it beside her. by @anna.devlin.art

Been experimenting with layered works and mixing digital with printing and painting directly on. Most of my things these days are in process. Undone. But I decided a while ago that the mess and the middle were worth being seen. So here’s my bird. I want to do a work with hundreds of them so this one will be 001. by @anna.devlin.art

My husband’s grandmother comes to visit us often. Our youngest daughter is her namesake. She left the world in 2020 but that doesn’t stop her from reminding us she is with us. A few weeks after she passed we had a yellow butterfly that would simply show up wherever we were, in a parking lot, on the sea shore, taking a remote hike in another state or even on our grocery shopping cart. We’ve started talking to her when she comes and each time we find our yellow butterfly, my youngest says hey grandmama.

She was a lady who made all feel welcomed. She was known for her caramel cake and her Sunday table. We are forever in love with butterflies and the reminder of her. by @anna.devlin.art
