Do you know that every time I travel with my husband we have to take separate buses? 🚌
Why? Because we are both wheelchair users, and most buses have only ONE wheelchair space. Not technically but according to the “safety rules”.

This means that every journey takes us at least 30 minutes longer than it would take other passengers. And, perhaps most absurdly, we cannot even travel together as a couple.

But this week, some good news! 🎉

@nct_buses has introduced six new fully electric buses, each with TWO wheelchair spaces! ♿♿⚡

This is a huge step towards reducing discrimination against disabled people and making public transport genuinely inclusive.

Should this have happened many years ago? Absolutely.

But better late than never!

Thank you, @Nottingham City Transport, for moving in the right direction. I hope that one day, being able to travel together won’t be something disabled couples have to celebrate as an extraordinary achievement.

Accessibility is not a luxury. It’s a basic right. ❤️

🍌 Currently on display in our Vitrines: ‘It’s a Wonderful Protest’ by The Velvet Acronyms (@thevelvetacronyms)

A collaboration between artists Anna Li and Simon Raven, The Velvet Acronyms use satirical ‘crip humour’ to challenge ableism in the arts, from the ghettoisation of disability art to condescendingly ‘celebratory’ forms of inclusion.

Inspired by Disabled Avant-Garde (DAG), a satirical organisation founded by Aaron Williamson and Katherine Araniello, The Velvet Acronyms explore disability as a critical and epistemological lens rather than a fixed or medicalised identity.

Bringing together collaborative sculpture, drawing, painting and video, the exhibition also presents artefacts & documentation from performances and actions undertaken over the past two years.

On view until 12 December.

🔨 🪚🪛 We’ve been having a very busy few weeks preparing two wonderfully dovetailing exhibitions: Alan Lodge ‘Common Grounds: Counterculture & Confrontation Since 1976’ in the Gallery, and The Velvet Acronyms ‘It’s A Wonderful Protest’ in our Vitrines.

Both exhibitions launch on Thursday 24th September, 6-8pm. Tickets have nearly sold out and we are unable to guarantee non-ticketed entry on the evening due to the popularity. If you are unable to attend the opening, both exhibitions remain open until December 12th, and several events are already listed on our website.

Yesterday installing It’s a Wonderful Protest with @tg_gal and my wonderful collaborator @raven_simon

We’ve been working towards this exhibition for almost a year, and now @velvetacronyms are finally taking over the @boningtongallery Vitrines.

Performance, films, strange objects, paintings, photographs, participation, protest, failure and plenty of absurd “crip humour” are coming together to create our evolving Exclusion Zone.

The exhibition plays with disability, dependency, institutional inclusion and all the expectations around how disabled bodies are supposed to behave, preferably. But we’re not going to pretend politeness! We have other plans.

I’m so excited to finally share it with you and would love to see you there!

Alice nello spazio latente presenta una nuova mostra di The Velvet Acronyms, una collaborazione tra l’artista ucraina Anna Li e l’artista britannico Simon Raven.

Il lavoro di Anna & Simon spazia dalla performance al suono e a un satirico “crip humour”, giocando con le aspettative assurde imposte ai corpi, alle relazioni e ai comportamenti e mettendo in discussione le fantasie di indipendenza e autosufficienza sullo sfondo dell’instabilità politica e di una crisi permanente.

Per ANSL SEX, gli artisti trasformano la galleria in uno spazio temporaneo a metà strada tra una discoteca, un rituale, un esercizio di formazione istituzionale e un sistema disfunzionale per la produzione della soddisfazione umana. Nuovi lavori video vengono presentati insieme a performance dal vivo.

Invece di offrire risposte, ANSL SEX abbraccia il fallimento e un ottimismo eccessivo. Propone Magic healing Disco come prescrizione, pleasure lottery come soluzione ai problemi e la performance come un modo temporaneo di convivere con ciò che non può essere aggiustato.
