Happy 💗 SIXTH 💗 birthday (on Aug 28) to my East.

The wisest and mightiest little person, a discerning observer before diving all in, an independent spirit who still loves a back scratch, and a fan of cheetahs, unicorns, any pool or craft, tagless clothing, squishies, and music - even if it’s mainly the Barbie soundtrack. But as you sing “this is my moment,” I know it really is.

You think “adore” is a step above love, and I don’t correct you, because maybe it’s true. And when you say “I adore you/this donut/my life” in your little British accent that drops the Rs, there’s really nothing better.

And I know you won’t want me to play mommy shark forever, so I try to grasp the smoke-like moment, and write down your one liners. Like the other night when you said that even if someone gave you 100 lollipops, you’d still love (adore) me more.

Which, when you’re six, is really the greatest compliment you can give.

Laid one of the best to rest yesterday. My heart is heavy but full seeing some of my favorites after too long, and witnessing the many many people whose lives were touched by Nate.

Whether it’s mastering the latest climbing gym or little legos, nailing your theatre camp debut, diving headfirst into any art project/pool, winning most battles of the will, serving up silliness in abundance, or melting us with your signature “three kithes” (cheek, cheek, lips) morning send-off - you are the brightest spark, making our world more colorful and life a blast. I’m so grateful for everyone who made turning a tiny bit older an enormous amount of fun. The best trip with the best friends complete with three castle tours, a newfound obsession with Ludwig II, daily shopping trips to Füssen, one insane hailstorm, endless baby bonding, an alpine coaster, a few lake dips, lots of pretzels and unearthing of Bavaria’s best non Bavarian food.
