I'm excited to share some news! Exponent II, a Mormon feminist magazine, did an artist feature on my work in the spring issue and included some images from a new series I’m working on titled MormonBSads. The BS in MormonBSads stands for benevolent sexism, the subtle, often well-intentioned ways patriarchal systems constrain women under the guise of protection and reverence. Drawing on this concept, I select quotes from male religious leaders directed at women and reimagine MormonAds, advertisements for teenagers published in church magazines since the early 1970s, many based on ideas sent in by readers. Paired with images from my archive or newly created ones, the work makes visible the subtext I internalized and am now actively unraveling.

Two more of my @photocenternw #chasethelight submissions. Titled: Color Construction: Lime Green and Orange, named for the color that began the work. I am pulling out and playing with construction paper lying around from my days with elementary school kids and being an art docent. These are more techniques I discovered through @nattynattynatnatnat Spring New Approaches to Still Life class.

@anna_ream here, with the last series I want to share and my final post in this takeover. “Pieces from Home” is a series of small collages I mailed to my oldest daughter during her final year of college in Florida. Created from an assortment of things available in our home, these were a small but tangible way to support her through a stressful senior year, and a chance for me to get out of my head and play with my hands.

1.      For Your Birthday, 11/2022
2.      Feeling the Urge to Weave, 10/2022
3.      Some Halloween Skeletons, 10/2022
4.      Random Things: Photo, fabric, cat fur, 9/2022
5.      In Honor of Surviving Hurricane Ian, 10/2022

Thank you for following along!!!

@anna_ream continuing with “Comfort Objects” from 2012-2016. The children in this series are my own, and those of friends and strangers. Their objects offer a window into their emotional lives, and a chance to reflect on the role physical possessions play in meeting our deepest psychological needs. Most of all, they are a vehicle for pondering childhood, and my own feelings about motherhood.

It’s @anna_ream again, back to share “Comfort Objects”, a series from 2012-2016. A comfort object is a toy or blanket that takes on deep emotional importance to a child.  Developmentally, they act as a physical stand-in for the mother-child bond, bearing the stains and scars of tears and play. As a mother of three, I’ve hunted for one at bedtime, packed it on trips, and sent it along whenever leaving a child in someone else’s care.

@anna_ream and I’d like to tell you a little more about my series The Solitude of Self. Working in the Pacific Northwest landscape, I was drawn to the places where the feminine and the natural world seem to speak the same language. I found it in what persists as surroundings change, what blooms briefly and fully, what holds on, and what finally lets go.

@anna_ream here with a series from 2021-2022. “The Solitude of Self” takes its title from Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s 1892 resignation speech and final public appeal for women’s rights. She argued that each person ultimately faces life’s storms alone and must find their own way through them. Women, she insisted, deserve to meet those storms fully equipped. These photographs grew out of time spent with young women I know well, at the threshold between girlhood and adulthood, where who they are is still being formed by what they move through.

Hello, I’m @anna_ream, here to share one of my more constructed projects. Madonnahood plays with the contradiction between idealized motherhood and the real, lived experiences of modern mothers. Referencing the visual language of Madonna paintings, I use props to symbolize experiences and roles common to mothers. The handmade elements and textile backgrounds draw upon the sewing, quilting, and knitting skills my mother taught me.

Image titles:
    1    Madonna of the Lilies
    2    Madonna of the Bedroom
    3    Madonna of the Carpool
    4    IVF Madonna
