Over the past few weeks, I’ve begun a new chapter in my art practice.

For years embroidery has been my way of exploring hidden systems, organic structures, and the slow accumulation of countless small gestures. Now I’m asking a different question: what happens when the surface itself is grown rather than woven?

I’ve started researching biofabricated textiles with a particular focus on mycelium-based materials. Unlike conventional fabrics these textiles are cultivated from living organisms, offering a completely different relationship between maker and material.

I’m fascinated by the idea of bringing together two slow processes: the growth of fungal networks and the repetitive act of hand embroidery. Rather than treating mycelium as simply a sustainable material, I’m interested in its structure, its behavior, and its potential as a collaborator in the creative process.

This is only the beginning. There are many questions, experiments, and probably many failures ahead—but that’s exactly what makes research exciting.

I’m looking forward to discovering where this journey leads.
⚡️ if you are a company that makes research and produces sustainable fibers and biomaterials (mycelium based is more preferred for my practice) - let’s collaborate taken in Da Nang, Vietnam by @anna_tsvell

Pafos Underground Gallery presents:
The Monstrous Natural.
Solo Exhibition of Hand Embroidered Works by Anna Tsvell.

Nature is rarely neat. It grows through decay, overtakes surfaces, adapts and leaves traces of absorption. In Anna Tsvell’s works this aspect of the natural world emerges through hand embroidery.

Dense black structures spread across linen. They evoke mycelial networks, cells, root systems and organic growths. They have no clear center - each form develops stitch by stitch, darkening, thickening, and gradually behaving like an autonomous organism.

The Monstrous Natural examines nature beyond it’s decorative image, beauty and harmony. Here, nature is closer to processes of infection, growth, and decomposition.

Anna Tsvell is an artist working with hand embroidery and linen. Her practice is about the darker and psychologically charged dimensions of natural processes. She has collaborated with Gucci, Dior, Tiffany & Co., and Adidas Originals. The Monstrous Natural is the first solo exhibition presenting embroidered works from this series.

When I got an email from @michaela_olijnyk I couldn’t believe my eyes: Michaela took some photos of these shells she saw at the shore on Wadawurrung Country / Anglesea, Victoria, Australia and they reminded her of my artworks.
I never saw these shells patterns in my life before but somehow they are so close to my works indeed. These are Mussel Beds - mussels tightly clustered and glued to the rock, they stick themselves down with super-strong fibers called byssal threads, which lets them survive waves, tides, and predators.
my dream is to see them myself in nature now🖤

I made some collages to show the similarity and added @michaela_olijnyk photos separately as well - take a look at these amazing Nature creations. Thank you, Michaela ! 🌹 by @anna_tsvell

My art was always about the nature on different levels, from recognizable figures to abstract forms that evoke cells, roots, fungi, mycelium, growth and decay.
