May is Mental Health Awareness Month: a month I don’t take lightly. Mental health conditions affect 1 in 5 individuals, yet there is still so much stigma surrounding something so evidently real. I am no stranger to this invisible struggle, and I understand how deeply it can impact every part of a person’s life.

It’s interesting how such intense internal battles can shape some of the most understanding, gentle, and compassionate people I’ve ever met. Being part of that 20% has taught me a lot, but more than anything, it’s shown me that empathy is one of the most powerful tools we have.

One of my journal entries from this past year captures that feeling:

“To be loved is to be known. Understood. Heard.
A quote that resonates with every part of my being. I have always wanted to be heard; just yearning to be understood, even when I don’t fully understand my own complexities.”

I will always strive to be someone others can turn to: someone who listens, understands, and creates a space where people feel a little safer than they did before.

If you’re navigating something heavy, you are not alone. You are worthy of being heard, of being understood, and of being loved exactly as you are. You are not hard to love because of these struggles and never allow anyone to make you feel otherwise. This month brings awareness but this is something I believe should be advocated for always.
