There are some incredible Ariel shots of Madeira all over IG right now, but you don’t need a drone to appreciate how beautiful Madeira is! A few tips for travel to Madeira:

1) Rent a car and spend money on a good car! Do NOT skimp on your rental. Driving in Madeira is no joke, even on the freeways. It is very hilly and you need power. Also learn how to drive manual and keep it in low gear down big hills. The streets can also be pretty small and narrow, so be careful!

2) Explore different parts of the island. Split your time between Funchal and something further out like Calheta.

3) Don’t miss the big hike from pico do arieiro to pico ruivo, and go at sunrise! You won’t regret it.

4) Don’t trust weather apps. The weather on one part of the island is likely completely different than another. Keep layers with you (especially for hikes in the mountains) and prepare for rain or sun.

6) Eat everything. Every meal I had in Madeira was absolutely incredible. I couldn’t believe how good the food was. Consistently good, and beautifully presented!

Beautiful Island and lovely people. Cannot recommend Madeira enough!
