Opening on October 11, "Uhengaparaoa, Taonga Tuku Iho: Ancestral Gifts and Contemporary Māori Art," celebrates Whakatōhea identity, connection to whenua (land) and whakapapa (genealogy), and the resilience of cultural traditions in the face of colonial suppression.

At the heart of the exhibition is a treasured kaitaka (cloak) from the Fowler Museum collection, regarded as an ancestor by the Whakatōhea community. In response, contemporary Whakatōhea artists create works that honor, reinterpret, and extend the knowledge carried through generations. From finely woven kete and kākahu to contemporary works incorporating recycled materials, feathers, and new forms, these artists demonstrate how mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge) remains vital and evolving.

"The thought I had with the waka is about how in the past, the stars were used for navigation. The waka represent the journey people are on. The eight-pointed stars are inspired by the woven Harakeke stars often seen at Matariki." ⁠

“I learned weaving through a textile design course in Wellington that included printmaking, dressmaking, photography, and weaving was one of the components of the course. It has always been a passion of mine to make things.⁠”
