Ten months ago I went to Indonesia for two weeks to initiate research to better understand Neglected Tropical Diseases in children. The past ten months has been constant communication with Indonesian doctors and future medical students. While this research isn’t finished, I have learned so much and I am forever changed by the experience.
I want to thank everyone that is apart of this research. I can’t wait to continue to analyze and understand the impact of these infections to hopefully lead to a better future for these beautiful, smart, and kind children.

South East Asia made me fall back in love with music.
I’ve struggled the past few years with my music degree. After high school, I went into college fully in love with music and the people associated with it. But I started to struggle finding relationships in the music community that were pure. I have had multiple professors and many student musicians, that take advantage of people and use them.
To be honest, I haven’t practiced my bass clarinet in over a year because it feels poisoned. It feels like a representation of who I don’t want to be. I have no drive to practice classical or jazz music due to the nature of the people I associate with it. In turn, I have no drive to want to be good at classical or jazz either.
I have begun to struggle with World Music too. Northern Illinois University has talented professors, but I’ve struggled to feel comfortable in the program. I’ve been faced with drama and individuals that steal the light from the music.

But playing music with strangers throughout South East Asia healed me in so many ways. There are people in other parts of the world that play music and are truly good people.
I feel more at home playing music in Indonesia and Thailand than I do studying music in the United States. It has helped me remember the purpose of my music studies- it’s not for my professors, “friends”, or even orchestral directors. My music degree is for me, and the beautiful people around the world that get so excited when a foreigner wants to experience and learn their traditions.
Thank you to everyone who played with me (even if you don’t play music often)❤️ by @annalantz_
