*During Jesus' time, the veil of the temple that separating the Holy Place from the Holy of Holies was massive. It was approximately 60 feet (18 meters) high, 30 feet (9 meters) wide, and 4 inches (10 centimeters) thick. It was too heavy enough to require 300 priests to manipulate and move it into place. After Jesus died, this massive veil was miraculously torn in two from top to bottom. The veil is a powerful reflection of Jesus' redemptive mission both His sinless life and sacrificial death. The tearing of the veil was a profound, symbolic declaration by the Father that His Son's redemptive mission was accomplished. The things of the temple were shadow of things to come, and they all ultimately point us to Jesus Christ. He was the veil of the Holy of Holies, through His death the saints can now enter into God's very presence. The veil was symbolic of Christ Himself as the only way to the Father (John 14:6).

*The Holy of Holies was the most holy place on earth. This was where the Ark of the Covenant and the Mercy Seat were located. A massive, thick veil hung in front of it to bar everyone from entering the symbolic presence of God. This signified that man was separated from God by sin ( Isaiah 59:1-2), it told sinful man that he could not approach God except by His prescribed means. The only person who could enter the Holy of Holies and remain alive was the High Priest with the blood of the substitude sacrifice, and only once a year on the Day of Atonement (Leviticus 16).

*The crucifixion of Jesus, culminating in His death at approximately 3.00 pm. The suffering was not merely physical pain, but the spiritual darkness of abandonment, the separation from His Heavenly Father. Jesus took our place, bearing the curse of our sins (Galatians 3:13), so we could receive His righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:21). Despite this intense torment, Jesus willfully embraced this suffering as a sacrifice of love.

*The seventh and final word of Christ on the cross, as recorded in Luke 23:46, is: "Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit". A final act of trust, willfully surrendering His life back to God the Father. The Son has accomplished to the jot and tittle what the Father had commissioned Him to do. The Son was indeed faithful unto death.

*The fifth of the seven last words of Christ on the cross is " I thirst", recorded in John 19:28. This highlights Jesus' human suffering and physical agony, while also fulfilling messianic prophecy. " I thirst ", this fulfils Psalm 22:15, "My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death."
A sponge drenched with vinegar was put to His mouth for Him to drink. This fulfils Psalm 69:21, " in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink."

*The fourth of the seven last words of Christ on the cross is: " My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me ?" These words are taken from Psalm 22:1, when Jesus uttered the words, He was indicating and proving that He was the Messiah who fulfilled the Scripture. By His human nature, Jesus was left totally on His own to bear the weight of the sin of the whole world, the Father turning away from the Son as He became a substitute for sinners.

Jesus ensures the care of His mother, Mary, by entrusting her to the apostle John. This act of intercession demonstrated immense mercy, offering forgiveness to Roman soldiers, and the Jews responsible for His suffering. By so praying, Jesus fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah 53:12, "he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors." The Messiah, Jesus Christ who exhibits amazing love by willingly bearing the sins of many and interceding for transgressors, rather than acting with hatred.

*Crucifixion is an extremely brutal and agonizing form of execution which causes death by bleeding. Jesus had to die by bleeding, our sins have to be "purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission" (Hebrew 9:22). Jesus' death by crucifixion was a substitutionary sacrifice when His blood served as the required, perfect payment for our sins. "Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold...But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot" (1 Peter 1:18,19). ".....and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. (1 John 1:7)
