Elevated . . . Tyrone Te Waa’s Uncle Karl enjoys the view. Peter Hawkesby’s Rokc the Moon works are lifted-up on a great variety of glazed and shaped feet, but nothing has the height advantage of Te Waa’s Uncle Karl — 2 metres up on a breadboard balanced on top of a ladder.

Come for a visit to Rokc the Moon this Friday 11-5, Saturday 11-3 . . . Runs until Saturday 24 October at 3pm.

Peter Hawkesby’s ROKC the Moon works — now showing — include Jerusalem Moon One and Jersualem Moon Too.
The pair look to have “fallen from the sky” as Roland Barthes famously described the 1957 Citroën — but are also supremely earthly products of Hawkesby’s boundless imagination. The gaping mouth of either is held open by an exceptionally robust tooth. These creamy leaning towers are relics of Te Whare o Rehua Sarjeant Gallery — sandstone core samples from its recent earthquake strengthening. A stalactite-like ornament hangs from one roof, while a deliciously lazy Hawkesby ‘M’ lazily slides along the brow of the other. The moon-like orb is reminiscent of the ebullient overscale golf ball that graced Augusta, Hawkesby’s long since deconstructed Eden Terrace kiln, named for the famous golf course in a nod to his green-keeper twin. ⛳️

Come for a visit. Gallery open Wednesday-Friday 11-5, Saturday 11-3 golf

For those sorry not to be in Te Whanganui a Tara to visit ‘Arohanui, Carmen xx’ at the Wellington Museum, we have good news, another Taumarunui legend is in town . . .

Tyrone Te Waa’s Miss Tammy aka Miss Taumarunui is in residence at the gallery. Tammy spent the recent Karangahape Art Weekend in the window of Colleen where her favourite hairdresser, Sean, was able to give her locks a special treatment. Moving along the road a week later, Tammy enlisted Tyrone to rethink the hair. A chin-length brunette Microbob was what she was after, but the hair refused to stay on

Call in and meet Tammy and her pals from Taumarunui, Aunty Berry xx, Uncle Karl and Nanny Kui. Rokc the Moon: Peter Hawkesby, Reece King and Tyrone Te Waa now showing.

Gallery open Saturday 11-3 — Happy Weekend

Karin Montgomery’s A Garden for Nicola Azzariti is now open on Level 5 at Te Papa — a room-scale garden of botanically accurate specimens (including weeds), conjured entirely from paper, wire and pigment.

Montgomery conceived the work as a gift to her great-grandfather, Nicola Azzariti, a fisherman from Trani, a seaport in Puglia, who arrived in Port Chalmers in 1875. His first-born child died the day his ship docked. He could not read or write, and his name is frequently misspelt in records of his life, including the small stone marking his child’s grave on Kā Mau Taurua Quarantine Island.

Montgomery has made a likeness of something Nicola Azzariti never had: a garden of his own. Her plant selection is based on research into whaler and early colonial gardens in Aotearoa.

The work traces the routes by which ordinary plants became entangled with trade, migration and colonial history. The California poppy was brought to Aotearoa on the boots of gold miners during the 1860s Otago gold rush.

Commissioned and acquired by Te Papa in 2024. Runs until June 2027

Meeting people before my time . . . Aunty Berry xx and Uncle Karl edition
Tyrone Te Waa describes Aunty Berry xx and Uncle Karl (pictured) as emerging from “the process of making a drawing and materialising that process; all part of a creative practice that feeds itself (kai pono) and eats itself as to ensure the output reflects the input.”

Aunty Berry’s powder-blue bear, worn at the jaunty angle of a beret, nods to the pōtae choices of artists and political figures — from the French Resistance and Polynesian Panthers to contemporary wahine Māori such as MP Hana-Rāwhiti Maipi-Clarke. The bear-beret also obliquely references the creative identity of American painter Amy Sillman: “A Drawer is more like a beaver who builds a dam from the ground up stick by stick, without an overview, but just with an animal urge to keep going until the thing becomes a form.”

There is family resemblance here too. In a recent interview on RNZ’s Culture 101, Tyrone talked about his creative whānau, including his interior-decorator Nan and “creative genius” Uncle Lance, who built a baby grand piano to house an electric keyboard and made his own teeth from tuning pegs.

As Tyrone puts it: “the performance of ‘making’ becomes a way of accessing ancestral memory. What I find interesting is locating the links between the past and present through my living family members as a way of meeting people before my time.”
