Cattle Feeding | Sandhills Ranching | Occasionally Spotted In Heels
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Steam flaking is just one of the ways we can process corn to increase starch digestibility and energy utilization. This method of processing corn requires more resources, energy and money than dry rolling or packing a high moisture corn pit, but it increases the value of whole corn by about 15%. This flaker is an R & R 24x 48 producing about 26 tons of flaked corn an hour. We’re producing a 27.5-28 lb./bu flake for these cattle. by @annamkobza

What a privilege it is to become.

Ten years ago this May, I graduated high school. This May, I graduated with my PhD. While finally reaching this moment is incredibly relieving, it also feels a little bittersweet.

Little me would be proud, we’ve seen and done a lot. Current me is proud too.

I’ve been lucky to have the best fan club and support system along the way. I know I can do hard things, but the truth is, I’ve been able to do hard things because of the people who stood beside me through all of it.

Here’s to becoming. taken in Nebraska by @annamkobza

There’s almost 60 years between these two photos.

This is my grandpa, Robert Gillespie. “Big Bob”.
He got into the cattle feeding business in the early 1960s. In the 1960s, large commercial feedlots were emerging across the plains, and Nebraska was becoming a premier feeding state. He and his partners, the Augustin brothers were one of the early adopters of large scale cattle feeding near Shelby, Nebraska.
1967 is when I believe this photo was taken. And a lot has changed since then.
In my bookcase sits a short book he wrote detailing him and my grandmother’s lives. Of course he tells stories of the feedlot which are my particular favorite. Like when an Alabama salesman came to the yard selling oyster shell flake as a roughage source, and how they ended up feeding it.

He wrote about the end too. The hardships of the 1980’s farm crisis, when 24% interest rates made it impossible to keep going. “…there was no way we could make the payments. It would eat us up.”

In 1967, the Omaha Stockyards were already seeing a decline in livestock receipts as the industry began shifting toward direct buying by packing plants and away from the traditional central market system.

In 1967, Nebraska finished about 3.1 million head of cattle.
Today we lead the nation finishing over 5 million head every year.

Beef was king of the meat trade then, and today’s it’s still king among consumers.

A lot has changed.
We feed cattle longer.
We feed them heavier.
We produce higher quality carcasses.
We read bunks with a laptop at our side instead of just a pen and paper.
We use micro machines and technology that would have been unimaginable sixty years ago.

Our tools are different, our cattle are different, and our industry as a whole is different. But despite being separated by nearly sixty years, here we are, standing in the same place. taken in Shelby, Nebraska by @annamkobza

Back in May I was invited by @annamkobza to come photograph the branding on their ranch in the Nebraska Sandhills. Given that the Sandhills are one of my favorite places for visit, there was no way I could say no! The Sandhills are a place where the cowboy tradition is still strong and folks come together to help each other. Thought y’all might like a little behind the scenes video from an awesome day.

I photographed the branding entirely on 35mm film on a Nikon F4 from the 1990s and really liked the photos I made, hope y’all do too! If you want to see more photos like this from across the Great Plains and American West, don’t forget to follow!

Talk about a legacy. A woman whose uncommon kindness and genuine love for others transcended the lines that so often divide us. She was truly a gem, and what a rarity to be collectively loved by us all.

That’s that me espresso 🎶 coffee for me is a ritual that I enjoy making every morning, so this isn’t a super quick deal if that’s what you’re looking for. But it is fun to explore the art of making espresso and I’m still learning! Drinking @bluelinecoffeeomaha Guatemalan roast today! taken in Cherry County by @annamkobza
