To all my friends and community in the Northern Hemisphere, I wish you a beautiful Autumn Equinox and a gentle transition back inwards.

I hope you can harvest the last fruits of the seeds you planted in spring, savour what has come to fruition, and slowly let go of what you no longer wish to carry into the next season.

For me, this time of year feels a little different. Being in Australia, I won’t be moving into autumn and winter, but into spring and summer instead, I will be experiencing a double spring and summer.

And yet, I notice that some part of me still longs to turn inwards. I find myself craving candles, warmth and a little more coziness, and it makes me realise just how deeply our seasonal rhythms can live in the body. My Northern Hemisphere rhythm is still very much a part of me.

As a herbalist, though, I’m secretly very happy to be welcoming another spring, and especially to experience it here in Australia, getting to know the incredible native flora and the plants that grow in this part of the world! by @annapur.a

I’ve been a little quiet around here lately.

I’ve just arrived in Australia and I’m still finding my way around, figuring out this new place, settling into our new life here and getting back into a new work rhythm.

There’s been a lot to take in and organise, so I’ve been a little less present on here than usual.

But I’m slowly finding my flow again, and there will be new content coming very soon.

Thank you for being here even in the quiet. 🤎 by @annapur.a

I took this photo a few years ago, and I loved seeing how the plants lean on and support one another as they grow. I hope that, as humans, we can learn to do the same, to lean on each other, support one another, and remain open to the strength that can be found in connection. by @annapur.a

Don’t get me wrong.
There is something deeply necessary about learning to stand on your own feet, to take responsibility for your life, face your challenges, and work through the things that are yours to work through. We need a certain degree of inner strength and self-reliance to navigate life, make our own choices, and meet what life asks of us. It is a capacity we need to develop, something we need to cultivate within ourselves in order to truly grow and become grounded in who we are.

But there is a point where independence can become something else entirely.
When being independent means never asking for help. When vulnerability feels like weakness. When we feel we have to have everything figured out on our own, or prove that we are capable enough, strong enough, independent enough.

And this is where independence can start to take our freedom away.

Because when we become attached to the identity of “I can or need to do this on my own,” we leave less room for the very things that make us human: needing each other, being supported, leaning on someone, learning from one another, and allowing ourselves to be held when life becomes too heavy.

And sometimes, we don’t just judge ourselves for needing others, we begin to judge others for needing us, too.

And when we begin to judge ourselves and others through this lens, when our ego, and the world around us, convince us that independence is the ultimate expression of strength, we slowly create distance between ourselves and one another. And in trying so hard to prove that we can stand alone, we can end up standing further and further apart. We isolate ourselves from the very connection, support, and sense of belonging that we need to thrive. Not because we don’t need each other, but because we have learned to see needing each other as something we should outgrow. by @annapur.a
